Has anyone on this forum had experience of the voyager or grand voyager? I'm thinking of replacing my X Reg VW Limited Ed'tn Multivan with a Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD Limited.

any views? They seem to lead the way in the MPV class.

What about the forthcoming MB R-class? I look forward to getting a used one for the family in three years time to replace the w211 estate. It seems to be the MPV alternative I've been waiting for.

Really depends on what you want. I had a friend with the earlier one. A bit of a shed but to be fair, I don't think it had ever been looked after properly. Actually it looked a bit of a shed when he bought it. Had it for 18 months and then flogged it when 5th gear disappeared. Thats my only experience but as I say, a properly maintained one (or new as I assume you are considering) should be a lot better.

They are fine, clearly not in Merc territory and the build quality isn't up to VW standards, as the materials are typically American. I don't believe the engine is the Merc one, at least it isn't the v6 out of the E280 so its not really a merc in any way, but I've had a jeep (same stable) for the last 3 years and its been a paragon of reliability. Not my idea of fun but the Wife still loves it and we have no plans to change any time soon.

My local Merc dealership rolled a gorgeous R class into the showroom yesterday when I was looking at the Grand.V... outstanding machine.

I was looking at a 05/55 plate G.voyager limited, they have hydraulic rear load levelling suspension and stow and go seating, all the rear seats folds flat into the floor - a 4 pot (??? why not 6 pots) 2.8crd 4 speed auto with 265 lb ft @2100rpm and claim 42.8mpg extra urban, 33.6 combined and only 25mpg urban - they weigh in at 2165kg's kerb.

I was also thinking of a 54/05 Caravelle T5...

It appears that from 04 onwards the grand voager had refined the body to eliminate road noise....

I dunno.. there doesnt seem to be many owners reviews on the net and I cant find a specific forum with owners posting...

We considered a Grand Voyager before buying the E320CDI Estate. It was just too big and van like for my tastes. But if the family grew then it would be our choice. The newer model has seats that fold into the floor. I liked that a lot.

i'm test driving a new discovery, a 04 old shape discovery and a limited edition double cab 110 defender today at 3.30pm, then testing the all new L200 warrior tomorow.

Think the Grand V isn't going to be versatile enough for me tbh...

I used to have one of the latest Discoverys as a company car and it was awesome. I really loved it, was the entry level 2.7 td s but with a few extras and was surprisingly fast. It felt v well built and handed brilliantly.

It is a vast step on from the previous Discovery

the older disco was a let down tbh, it was one of the last ones made before the new disco, was the top spec fully loaded model, £24K worth, I thought it was gutless. only 17K on the clock. I was put off when the salesman began saying that owners didnt mind the poor reliability and high maintenance costs as they tended to be landy fans thru and thru - well my bank mamager aint a fan i know that much.

I can only afford around £27K and was hoping to pick up an early registered new disco but it seems I was a bit optimistic, they go for 30K with 7 seats and the spec i'd like.

I'm looking forward to the defender, it was out loaned to a service customer so i'm testing it on saturday. The limited edition silver is a good package for £24K...

I think the new 06 L200 Animal seems the best bet tho as its reasonably priced :D

I've had loadsa interest in my Vee Dub multivan, it's only been on the net autotrader for 48 hours and isnt due out in the magazine til next Thursday - it may well be gone by then...

anyhow, this aint about a chrysler anymore and has nowt to do with mercs, so i'll shut up now... lol.

We've had 7 seaters in the family continuously since 1993. I am curious about the new R-Class, could be a neat second hand buy.

I've tried just about them all, in 4x4 format and normal MPV, and for the last two times have come back to the Seat Alhambra. The other can't touch the overall package. TDI, 45mpg, even with seven up, and don't be fooled by the published 0-60 time. An MX5 1.8i failed to pass me in a straight 1mile drag last night. Very responsive to drive through the gears. The landrovers and Mitsis are hopeless. No apparent usable purpose for all that extra fuel they burn.

Drove the Voyager in the US for a few holidays out there, and it's big, drives like a barge though. The folding seats are great, the only thing that would make the Alhambra better would be those. I put a big roofbox on the for the holiday trips, works just fine for a little extra space. The Voyager is reliable, second top in the What Car reliability statistical surveys for MPVs. Previa is top.

If I was buying another I'd take a close look at the new Galaxy due out in the summer. Ford have made it bigger to compete with the Voyager and have included the folding seats too. The 2.2TD version will blitz the Voyager on performance on economy.

Enjoy whatever you buy!

G wagon... :D My inlaws bought a 1985 G wagon from a merc specialist couple of years ago, fully restored in metallic gold with loadsa chrome  the 2.8 chow'd the juice tho and it did about 15-20 mpg iirc... hardle got used and wasn't garaged (cos they were lazy) left it out on the drive and the weather got to the chrome... shame, some colored chap from london bought it with the intention to black out the windows and throw a tonne full of ICE in it...

anyhow, I've put a deposit down and ordered a new 06 mitsi l200 animal with 5 speed auto option with o/drive, 258lb ft at 2200rpm. take delivery at end of month.

Hope I don't regret it.

Of course I will be hanging on to my 124 as the general hack about... at the mo it's costing a tenner a week in fuel to do all the little run abouts, weekend jaunts and commuting for the wife.

So, all is calm again.. just waiting for the vee dub to go.
