ah yes. the old air in the fuel lines syndrome! cant think of anything else it couldbe unless its had some bad fuel in or the fuel has been in the car for a long time and gathered a lot of moisture into it! if no air is visible in the clear pipes near the fuel filter, try replacing the fuel filter and some fresh fuel in. knew a guy who had similar problems on a fiesta diesel. only did about 3-4k miles a year. he traded it in. next owner found the car to be faultless as it was used regularly and the diesel hadnt time to absorb too much moisture. diesel is hygroscopic, (absorbs moisture for those who have never heard the term before) much like brake fluid is. thats why its recommended to change brake fluid, or at least have it tested periodically!
