There is contradiction regarding fitting a used gearlever to these cars & W220 S class.
Some say fit & code with Star.
Alternate advice says they can only be successfully coded when new. This because
215/220 do not have steering locks & the facility is used for individual car security.
Basically cannot use secondhand modules.
What is the correct answer ?

970 Panamera Turbo; W221 S500L AMG Line, C215 CL500, W251 R350L AMG Line, plus several more now gone
I’m pretty certain that used gear selector modules can be recoded.

I’m also pretty certain that my C215 had a steering column lock!

Smart + others :)
If your car isn’t fitted with a steering lock, then the gear-lever assm is a security locked part and can not be recoded unless you find a place to virginise it. It will be assigned to the original car.
