CL420 rust on front wings problem - how should I tackle it?

My 140 cl420 has a rust problem at the front of the wheel arch on both front wings. My question is, should I get the original wings repaired and resprayed. or is it better to fit replacement new wings - my concern with new ones is will they be the same quality as the originals.
Any advice would be helpful.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I would fit new ones for what they cost, when fitted coat the underside with Waxoil and they should see you out.

Pattern parts are cheaper but take longer to fit,,welding will not last and as they have to be painted anyway its not worth it.

Very nice cars though

Can you suggest a suplier for a pair of new wings, and how much should i expect to pay?

Hi, sorry to hear that you have got some rust problems. I also had a CL420 until recently (sold it last month) and they are lovely cars.

Unfortunately it is not going to be a cheap job to fix your problem, but as Malcolm has said it is not really worth just repairing them as a good repair job will cost almost as much as replacement and the rust will come back in just a year or two.

Pattern wings are much more difficult to get for a CL than some other cars. Eurocarparts currently list a RH wing for £185 but don't appear to have a LH wing?

On E-bay at the momet there is someone selling what is described as genuine pair of MBwings for CL at £235 each (but make absolutely sure they are right for your year of car). If they are as described this is a good price.

Don't forget you will also need to allow to spray any wings you get (unless you can get the exact colour match from a breakers yard without any scratches etc.). This will probably be at least £500 for a good job, possibly more.

As a word of warning, I had the rear bumper of my CL resprayed last year. I decided to get it done at my local body shop due to cost - I paid £225 for removal respray and replacement. The job was OK but not brilliant; acceptable for a rear bumper but it would not have done for any major body panel. I also had a quote from a top flight repairer that was £380, so over 50% more. For your wings you will need to get a good quality spray job done, anything less is false economy as you will not be satisfied, nor will any furure prospective buyer.

Anyway, good luck and let us know how you get on.

regards,

Dave

Its not a cheap fix, CL front wings are £300++++ vat Ive just had my drivers side on replaced, they rot from the inside out and even though mine looked ok it was the paint that was keeping it together.
The body shop said to repair it then it would cost more in labour than a replacement wing.
You will only be able to buy through MB as pattern dont exist for the CL. If you give me your chassis number I might see if I can find some.
