Hi all
Have searched and read lots of posts, but getting real confused where to start.

CL500 2002. Has the old small square Command system in it.
After having reviving it due to it being driven through a lake (I know! Long story, see previous post!)
All was working perfect until we set sail on the lake.
Water level came up to bottom of doors (not inside)
Now dried out i have no sound from Radio.

Have read lots of posts about optical link, but im struggling to understand them if honest.

Radio lights up and changes channel but no sound.
CD player says "Not found" or something similar
Telephone is not lighting up at all and says something like "Not found"
Tape player lights up and sounds like whiring but no sound
Mute button shows on and off on screen when pressed as it should.

Ive checked all the entertainment fuses (I think) 4 in the passenger side box and the one under rear seat
Have done the error diagnostic thing on the command system and it shows as N1112
In the diagnostics bit, I have reset the system and also tried the kickstart bit
Also disconnected the battery for an hour.

I read there is a "clip" that I can buy to by pass segments? But am struggling where to start.

Can anyone give me a bit of an idiots guide please?

Have you looked at the wiring looms going into the doors?

Optical link D2B cable runs from CD changer in the trunk to the COMAND2.5 Head unit.

Disconnecting the battery for an hour won’t have done the car any good at all by the way!!!

Hmmm, I had this problem N1112 means that there is no communication between two of the components.

Now this 'could' be a fibre optic fault, but maybe like mine is a component fault.

The lack of comms then means it cannot 'find' the CD.

Go in your boot, left side, under carpet, you will have the CD player, under that there is the Bose amplifier. Think it's all held in with 10mm bolts.

Carefully take them out. The amp has its own fuse in it, check fuse. You may be lucky! Check area is dry, (if it gets wet - bad!)

I was able to source another amp on eBay (it was actually from a similar year CLK) think it was about £25. The only difference was the 'tangs' on the clk female plug, so I shaved them off with a scalpel.

Plug n play, worked a treat. Hope this helps.

It's possible that it is the CD player kaput, if you buy a D2 fibre optic link you can bypass the CD player, and your radio will work.
You would then have to source a replacement CD player on the Bay.

Not tried it on an MB but one of the ways we check fibre cables at work is to use the phone camera and look for a signal down one leg. It shows as a red/purple light on one link (the other is a return path).

This is a fibre optic link:

Effectively it takes the fibre signal incoming and returns it to the loop.
All devices on a MOST fibre link are in a loop configuration - in other words the signal comes from the first device to the second which then passes it to the third and so on to the last device which returns it to the originator.

You can see how it works below:

A break in the loop prevents the whole system from working. The idea of the link is to isolate where the loop is broken by bypassing devices by taking that device out of the loop and passing the signal through.

After disconnecting battery, you will have to synch the windows. It's easy.
And you will get a brake warning when you first drive it which will disappear in normal driving.

Never had any issues when I've disconnected battery bar those.

Re sailing - check the boot area didn't flood!

There is also a fuse on rear SAM, under rear seat. I'll try and look it up and post it up later.

Brake warning light reset:

Start car. Leave in Park.

Turn steering wheel lock to lock twice.

This establishes min/ max parameters for steering angle sensors.

Warning light goes out.

Also check the left side where all the gubbins for COMAND sits. It sounds (no pun intended) like your AGW (audio gateway) has been fried.

You need a new friend!!

To be fair, the car was about a foot deep in water, so im guessing there could well be enough depth of water to get into the left hand side bit in the boot.. Especially if theres a drain plug, or grommet around that area.. Will look as soon as indoors.. Fingers crossed.

As I say the Phone has no lights on at all, maybe no power? but fuses are ok..
Radio lights up and plays with no sound..
Sat nav lights up but no sound
TV lights up
CD changer shows the message cant find etc..

Sounds like water ingress into the system somewhere in the boot, could have fried several components

Ok so hurried home and “removed” the carpeted section covering the left hand boot area... Wow that took some bending!
No water in there at all

Yellow blade fuse in the Amp is all ok.. checked all fuses in the front 2 fuses boxes and under rear seat box and all ok.
No water in there at all.
There’s a plug with orange wires that I teased out of the side of the amp. Has a red bulb on it that’s off.

Everything I try, changing between cd, radio, nav etc. Or in diagnostic, kick start system, reset system, does not make the red bulb come on.

But when I push the on/off button to turn radio on and off the red light flashes 4 or 5 times then goes off

Anyone any idea where to start looking next?
Sorry for the beginner question

So, a signal is going to your amp (flashing light when head unit goes on)... and nothing happens. I would still suspect the amp has failed.

Loads on the bay, £40-50 at the moment, but you could search more, I searched "mercedes w215 Bose amplifier", also try W220, W209, or just leave model blank. Look at pics to check the physical fittings are same, you may have to shave plastic key/tangs on the receptacle socket.

You could put a 'wanted cheap as chips' ad in the classified section on here.

Should the light flash 4 times then go off? Shouldn’t it stay on?
Your an absolute star! Thanks so much for all the advice! Ebay it is then! Would one of them clip things prove it’s the amp?

Thanks for all your time it’s really appreciated

The light flashes to open comms, as it's an optical signal, no response and it stops.

I think the link, if installed bypassing amp, may allow HU to 'see' the CD player, but you'll still get no sound. Not completely sure, to be absolutely honest.
My reasoning then would be if it didn't 'see' the CD, then re connect amp, and use the link to bypass CD player.
If sound returns, amp is OK and CD player is dead.

You could leave link in, so you would have radio & tape, but no cds, whilst you look for a new CD player.
But I've heard of more amps dying than CD players.

The only D2B link I saw on eBay was £20 plus p&p from the USA.

Maybe someone has a spare they would loan/sell?

Ps, the MOST optical system is on the later cars, yours will have the D2B optical system.
