Hi all

I’ve owned my 2004 CL500 since last December and car has a full service history between Mercedes and Specialist, it has clearly been well looked after and maintained.

The car needs a ‘B’ service looking at the documentation.

Given the cars age, I wandered if it would be ok to carry out the service myself, I would buy all genuine Mercedes parts and oils etc.

My friend owns a Saab garage nearby and they used to do all the work on my 460bhp Saab 9-5, so I have a facility that can easily do the work.

Can anybody tell me whats involved and whether this is something I should do myself or pay to take it to my local Mercedes specialist?

Many thanks.

Kindest regards.

I cannot tell you exactly what a service involves on your car, but at that age l see no reason to advise against it. I've more or less always serviced my own cars and l work with my Merc independent, who is quite happy just to do the jobs l cannot do, or don't want to do. Keep receipts etc to prove to the next buyer.

B services is usually always engine oil + Filter and a brake fluid flush.

There may be additional items due based on mileage (air filters, cabin filters, spark plugs etc)

Its straight forward work. We check tyres, brakes, suspension, belts, fluids, lubricate all latches, check common fault areas on different models.

There’s nothing that can’t be handled on the driveway. No SBC on this car.

I had a full brake fluid service in February, Oil & Cabin Filters and engine oil will be needed - Air Filters too apparently - I was pondering fitting some K&N or BMC Air Filters too.

Definitely do it yourself, you may have ABC So that may need a more methodical approach but the basics are very straightforward.

I think the general consensus is that they make a good induction noise but .... that's about it. ;)
I saw some good things about the BMC filters on Tim ‘Shmee150’s YouTube channel - BMC fitted to an SLS Black Series and a CLK63 AMG Black Series - seemed pretty positive although I’m fairly sure that it may well be snake oil - was just curious more than anything else tbh.

I was there with Anthony that day and the hands you see installing the air filters are mine.

So heres the thing with performance high flow filters. Do they improve BHP?? Yes. Do they improve performance? Yes.

But:

High performance filters are designed with high air flow in mind, in other words, when the engine is signing at high RPMs at +100 MPH in track specific circumstances. Its also best to map the ECU to handle things accordingly.

Interestingly when we first fitted the filters, the dyno was showing drop offs in performance as the VVTs and MAF's were trying to work out and what to do with the increase air volume. It wasnt until Anthony added some of his magic programming to the ECU did we start to understand the gains. We must have done 8-10 dyno runs that day.

Conclusion:

I wouldnt bother fitting them to your stock standard MB that you drive to work with everyday, youll see little benefit or improvement. However if you have an AMG which you enjoy like Tim does (Nurburgring laps and 300 KMH runs down autobahns) then fit a set and have Anthony get you the very best out of what you have.

As an aside, I was stunned at the increase the BMC filters gave and they certainly get a recommendation from me.
