Another point here is, if the car has a sun roof, its headlining down and sun roof out to do a paint job on the roof.

Oh well my best offer was rejected, but it was the highest offer so far.
Discovered the central part of the roof must have been resprayed as their was dust spots in the clear laquer and obviously the same crap sprayer must have been comissioned to do the bonnet as that was a little orange peeley!

So the search goes on unless they accept it later tomorrow.
Hmmm am I asking too much for a genuine 37,000 low mileage serviced early 2009 CL 500
For £15,000 to £15,500?

In 3 years time they'll be £1500.

Old CLs and S-Class always nosedive value wise once they get a little older, running 221s are £3k cars now, examples with expensive problems have fallen into breaker territory.

You've had a lucky escape.

Only ray of light is that 216 are rare cars, so quite a bit more exclusive than 215s, which seemed to be everywhere when they first came out.

Not happened yet on the CL 216, I bought mine 4½ years ago for £24k, its still worth say £17k, I lost far more on the SL

Interesting figure there, not much difference from the 215 to 216.

Actually there is a big difference, and nearly twice as many 215's made.

So ½ of the ones that bought a 215 decided not to get their fingers burnt again and ½ were happy to get the newer one, or maybe ½ of the 215 owners snuffed it with the shock of the cost of parts.

215 total

The one thing I've not compared it to is the CLS, 80% of the car for 65% of the cost... both coupes, both big engine options... I strongly suspect the 219 drew customer attraction away from the 215/ 216.

These are the Europe-only figures for the CLS:

2004 5.543
2005 20.147
2006 20.262
2007 17.098
2008 12.224
2009 6.083
2010 3.975
2011 17.414
2012 12.797
2013 15.139
2014 10.289
2015 12.600

The way Mercedes are sold changed over those figures, the first cars were sold, often to business customers, but later cars are nearly all on PCP/leasing, so the offers on the cars tend to drive the sales, if MB aren't that bothered about shifting CLs then there are no offers, thus no sales.

It's easier to see on a chart. MB's global sales figures stayed at around the 1 million mark from 2001-2012 with a bit of a dip after the global recession kicked in. The main increase 2012 onwards is due to China kickoff and increasing US sales, Europe only really saw an upturn last year.

Mercedes UK sales

2005 82247
2007 82321 (pre crash)
2015 144477

Either everyone is suddenly minted despite almost 10 years of recession/depression, or cheepo lease deals and cheap PCPs have kicked things off?

Cars are sold differently in the UK versus the rest of Europe then?

Yes. To me (and looking at what I've found when digging around the gubbins of the engine bay in my CL) that then raises the question of, "What else has the previous owner bodged to stay on his/ her budget?"

I know my CL was bought by its 3rd owner in '07, on 87k miles. The car would've been 7 years old then and at this point MB service history stopped. 35k miles and 8 years later I come along. Now, at 7 years old I'll guess that the £~75k car was sold for ~£15-20k, still a nice car in the then-current shape (although pre-facelift)... and in that 2007- 2015 period, nothing but bodge jobs were carried out. Like the broken sidelight harnesses, I'll have to have the bumper off to repair that now; the previous owner used a combination of really neat soldering and heatshrinking, and twisted wire wrapped in electrician's tape... for the sake of £150 to have bumper removed and refitted.

Not everyone treats cars well and I'd say that the members of this board are very far above the average cut for the way they look after their motors.

Someone who'd had a dodgy repair carried out on a 216... I'd just steer clear of that car. Untold misery lies that way, I can feel it in me waters.

I understand that, bu think it was done by BCAs repairers to slam it through the auction.
Anyway for those very reason I bid low and it was rejected. So the hunt is on for hopefully a genuine 2009 one.
Luckily I am not in a hurry.

I wondered where most private sellers advertise. Shame the Sunday Times no longer has a motoring for sale section. Years ago one could place an ad in the wanted section. My friend did rather well out of that, every time he wanted a new upgrade he just advertised ... DoNt trade it in I will beat the price for a perfect car. And he got 4 perfect "bargains on the trot."
