Can any member recommend an insurer for my 1989 107 300sl my current insurer is looking to double my premium this year, any ideas would be greatfully received. How can you pay £132.00 for the current year and then they look for £270+ the next year ?, claim free, accident free, limited to 3,000 miles per annum, garaged, alarmed , what more do they want from us.

Thankyou

I have been with Footman James for several years. In fact they called me yesterday to say that my insurance expires today and that it was strange that I hadn't renewed early as usual. They renewed over the phone there and then. (I hadn't received the renewal forms).
They cover the newer exotics as well as the venerable.

classic car insurance - shop around!

Craneboy

I have three cars on classic/collectors insurance policies.

There really is no alternative to shopping around... because whichever company you are with, once you are on their books they will try to push up the premium come renewal time (and rely on inertia to keep your business!)

Among the 'classic car' brokers, try Footman James, Norton, Lancaster, Carole Nash, Richardson Hosken, Peter Best or even Norwich Union Direct (they took over Hill House Hammond, who had a good 'specialist vehicles' dept for LHD and collectors' cars). Some give additional discounts if you are a member of the relevant car club.

There are relatively few actual underwriting insurers: Chaucer, Equity Red Star and Cornhill are among the most widely used - but you'll find different brokers quote different prices for a policy with the same insurer.

It's also worth comparing not just the premium, but a few of the crucial policy elements that can make a difference to the cost and may be more or less important to you - amount of excess, breakdown cover, protected NCD, EU cover, agreed value. Opting for limited mileage can make a big difference to the premium too. And once you have a shortlist, haggle! You may find your existing insurer/broker will reduce his premium to keep you on his books.

Takes time and a few phone calls, but can save you £hundreds on a year's cover.

Good luck!

Classix car insurance

Hi,
Thanks for all your comments, i have phoned loads of insurance companies and the best so far is Adrian Flux, all this "if you get a better quote come back to us" is total codswallop, why cant these so called professional insurance companies give their best quote to start with.
I will probably go with Adrian Flux, who gave the best quote first time round with no messing.
Look here, the worst quote i had was £425.00 from Lancaster down to £163 from Adrain Flux, whose pulling the fast one eh !!

Thanks All

I have an MGB Roadster and this is insured, through a broker, Bishops Calway (01273 820303). I have found them to be very competitive both for classics and also modern cars. It is worth giving them a call.

Can I suggest you check one point if you go with Adrian Flux: the "cancellation" conditions. I had a bad experience with them. I insured one of my cars (fully comp). About three months later work took me overseas, so I took that car off the road and sought to cancel my insurance cover. Flux in effect recalculated the premium on a pro-rata basis in such a way that no refund of premium was due! I haven't dealt with them since.

I get a deal with Frizzells

through the CSMA. It worked out cheap enough to insure the car fully comp and business use all year round. After all, they do my other cars as well, and we can only be driving two of them at anyone time. It costs about the same as my C280, but with a bigger excess.

That's useful advice. My insurer insisted that when parked, doors and windows should be locked. Fine, but it's a convertible which meant fitting the roof back on too. They also insisted that the car is in my garage if parked within a mile radius of my house after ten at night. Great, but if I drive into town (1/2 a mile) for a meal, the car has to be in bed by ten. I ditched them. Small print small print small print.
