I've had a 06 C220 CDI for a few weeks now but have been waiting for the dealer to get me the handbook.

The car is an auto with the Classic/standard/manual (c/s/m) gear button. How does this work? I can't figure it out.

My previous cars have been very mechanical manuals so this is a bit new to me.

At the moment the car is always in C mode.

The D- / D+ options I see change the gears up/down but in C mode I seem to have to change down first in order for it to be able to go up.

Could anyone who is familiar with this sort of box give me a quick idiots guide in how to use it?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I've taken a look at it.

It seems to say that you just press the button "repeatedly". What does that mean?!?!? Do I keep jabbing away at it until something changes or should it change on a press? Lost in translation maybe?

Be good to hear from someone who has this set up on how it should work.

I'm not familiar with c/s/m - is it a Sport model, with paddle changes?

Mine has C/S (it's comfort and standard).

The car will start in whatever was last used and the C or S shows in the instrument panel display. Press the button again to switch modes.

In C it starts (in both forward and reverse) in 2nd gear. This is what used to be called W, for winter, mode. Some people use it all the time but I find it makes the car seem like it's asleep, so I drive mine in S all the time.

I've no idea how the m bit works in your car if it has paddles. Mine changes a gear at a time by nudging the selector, or several gears if you hold the selector one way or the other.

There's no paddles but the gear lever can be nudged to change up & down.

However no amount of pressing the C/S/M button seems to change the display on the dash from C.

I thought you only had M if you had paddles / buttons?

The fact nothing changes in the display would suggest something is amiss.

I agree, the only Mercedes I've driven with C/S/M buttons have the paddles as well.
