Deisel is very good, just wipe it on and leave it to disolve the black specs.

And do not spill any on your driveway, it will disolve that as well.

I use car polish with a little light tcut for the difficult bits. It is laquer paint after all (what would you use on your bonnet?) . Then once clean and shiny, blather on some alloy wheel wax to seal and protect it. (got mine from Halfords so its easily available) Re-apply every 4-6 months or so and the dust just wipes off.

This is pretty much what I do also, done this on all my cars and wheels have always been easier to clean on subsequent washes as the brake dust doesn't seem to settle because of the smooth finish left on the wheels after polishing.

Try "Wonder Wheels", amazing stuff, I use it on both my cars and bikes, Halfords sell it.

It is great stuff for cleaning the wheels but over time it wrecks the finish. Plus, as it's acid, it also promotes corrosion.
After 3 years of using it, maybe once very 3 weeks or so, my alloys were a cloudy white colour. I do occasionally still use it, but then immediately polish and wax it back up to bring back the shine, and once waxed, any wheel cleaner becomes unnecessary.

Not regularly cleaning your alloys will make them impossible to clean, the bits of brake pad that form a film on your wheels will given time degrade and eat into the finish of the wheels.
Avoiding hard braking will reduce the need to clean the stuff off.
