The varnish on the wood veneer around the sliding drinks holder on my c class appears to have chipped off a piece approximately 20mm by 3mm along the edge. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get this restored to original condition through a garage, or am I stuck with what is now a slightly less than perfect edge which draws your eye to the imperfection.

Your comments and help appreciated.

The only answer is to strip it and re finnish with a 2 pack laquer, then polish.
there are plenty of dash board renovation firms out there, its normally the laquer that comes off, not the veneer, or replace the panel from a breaker.

I'd just replace the panel. I believe they aren't that expensive. You could try the touch-up boys (though I've never heard of them doing wood) or how about a french polisher!
