Hi ,
I own a 2005 CLK 220 and in the last week I have noticed that on the roof a small section of paint has sunk and pitted around the sunken area , The area is a bit smaller than a 2 pence piece , The paint is not broken so it is not a stone chip , It is not bird crap as the paint has no discolouration at all (and I always clean off bird crap asap) I don't park under any trees so it's not sap that's done it . I wash the car every week weather permitting and have only noticed it in the last week or so . I took it back to mercedes who done a paint reading test on it and said the depth on the roof panel was very consitent with factory standards and there are no signs of a touch up job as the paint depth would have been different . I have read that it could be solvent popping but could this take 18 months to come through the paintwork , If any one has any advice please can you help me as I want to go back to Mercedes with a solid case for getting it repaired , Look at the link for a picture of the paint mark

Does the affected area move with finger pressure or does the paint flex if you push your finger thumb nail into it, it looks to me like its rust coming through, ie the roof panel is rusting from inside the car outwards.

I looked at it again, that is no stone chip, they must fix it, it could be some chemical reaction, through poor cleaning or as Jib says from the other side

It does not flex when pressed I dont really want to press it too hard , As if it cracks then MB will say "it's a stone chip , Outside influence " and then my case is lost . I only use Meguairs cleaning products on my car and when I do clean it which is nearly every weekend I really P*** the wife off becasue I spend several hours washing / waxing / polish . I never use car washes , hand car wash places . I have a CD disc of similar photos which I took yesterday and will keep on my file ,

MB - Called me this morning I have to take the car into Hertfordshire MB next week to see a body specialist , They say though I can't be with the car when he inspects it just in case I try to use my charisma to win him over and get the repair done !! .

We will see

I do understand how you feel, you give it all the love and care in the world, and through no fault of your own this starts to happen, it does leave a bad taste, it will go away, and good luck.

After recent experiences with MB paint claims I have to say that I'd be staggered if you get any argument. Its obviously a manufacturing defect (they happen) and they'll just fix it without a murmur.
Relax - it'll be fine :)
