Yep as an owner of that combo I'd say a strong reliable engine if a little coarse for such a pretty car.

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
I've the 646 in a 2009 211,
and the 651 in a 2014 639.

I would take the 646 over the 651 any day.
Even as standard the power and torque spec of the 646 beats the 651. And it's smooth and quiet.
You would expect it to be t'other way round by reputation.

Does the newer engine have a higher euro rating for emissions?

646 is eu4,
651 is eu5.
Neither are suitable to please the cities that penalise so from a selfish point of view why take the risk of the DPF that comes with the 651?

Some 651's do meet eu6, but as far as I'm aware they then have the additional Adblue element to drain your pocket one day.

The debate is raging as to if cars that develop expensive problems and are then scrapped do offer a green advantage over the less complex engines that may run for ,00's of ,000's miles more.

In fairness,
in the 639 we are sat on the engine, where the 211 can afford more sound insulation.

Due to a saga I've no wish to repeat the 639 is hopefully soon to return to the road. Then I'll get a true comparison over some distance driving.
While the 639 ticks boxes the 211 can't I feel that the 211 wins on being an easier long distance motor.
I am looking forward to driving above of the retina burning tech of many LED equipped motors, as the darker nights draw in.

My 2009 211
170 Hp (125 Kw),
400 N/m.
Kerb weight1,785 Kg

My 2014 639
163 Hp (122 Kw),
360 N/m.
Kerb weight 2,191 Kg

It would seem the 639 may have some headroom for mapping.
I would expect the 639 to be geared to compensate for the additional weight and that they are often stop / start taxis (although the 211 was too).

But the 211 pulls far easier and always feels to be more ready to go. It may have been mapped prior to me but I don't think so.

Slight hi jack for personal interest.
Do the later 272's (post 2729..30 468993 I believe) have nay other issues?

It generally looks like most of the engine gubbins is situated within the 'V'. So meaning most replacements can be carried out with the engine in situ, unlike the diesel 651.

Mines at 102K miles and running beautifully…:)
Swirl flap issues are fairly common that can lead to an engine warning light. There is a upgraded part available to fix the issue, although there is quite a bit of labour involved with removing the inlet manifold to fit it…
