hello first of all a merry x-mas and a happy new year to all forum members:p

now my clk is giving me a few problems and i think it may be the auto box....when i am at a standstill either at lights or a give way when i go to pull away slowly with low acceleration it seems to rev high and then change gear suddenly making it jerky and not at all smooth, then it settles down and changes fine........sometimes when i'm slowing down just before i come to a stop there will be a little clunk and you can feel the box going into 1st.

on another occasion when pulling out of a junction i went to accelerate and it seemd to lack any sort of pull although you could hear the engine revs get higher.....again after a while it settled down and changed fine.

anyone any ideas to help me out here, the engine management light is currently on although the garage i used told me it was for my air flow meter which i got replaced, but the light came back on and the gargae took the car back in and got ir diagnostic tuned and said it was showing up the same problem, they checked again and have assured me that is fixed and i need to get the electronics on my car checked, would this have anything to do with the way the car is driving?

many thanks, paul

Check you fluid level you may need to buy a dipstick to do this.

If over 50k miles and fluid never been changed, replace fluid with genuine merc oil.

These box's have clutch packs that need good quality oil and the valves can stick with bits of dirt in there.

Drain torque converter too.

Your car is in the limp home mode probably.

The camshaft sensor can leak oil,, this oil goes into the wiring loom, and into the MAF,, the oil then gets burnt in the engine and the oil contaminates the O2 sensor, and it is this sensor that turns on the lamp.

Take a look inside the MAF,,if its oily and even only the tiny est amount at all this is your problem.

ok i've just taking the car out for a wee drive again without music and the heaters/fans on.

it's not running smooth at all sometimes when changing up from 1st in the 's' setting or 2nd in the 'w' setting.....but this is not all the time!

also when it does accelerate away smoothly with decent power when i take my foot off the gas and let it slow down on it's own you can feel a jerk when it goes down a gear.....

also i engaged reverse and accelerated gently and nothing happened, put foot on brake, changed back to 'd' and then back into reverse and it went fine the second time??

i'm getting worried now, the car has done 68000 miles and has a full service history although not all by a specialist dealer.....it's standard apart from a remus sports exhaust from the cat back.

See if there is an oily film inside, that will tell you all, ignore the gearbox

Its all as my anser number 5

inside the Air flow meter or MA. If there is any oil or oil film inside,,look at the connector plug,, is that oily,,if it is then that is the problem, or the engine breathing pipes can fail.

There is a post be Jim of Essex on this and I will try and find it

thanks malcolm, i will book the car back into the garage and print of any info you can get me or the answers on this thread and let them see what the problems are, i paid a fair bit to get this fixed and obviously they have not done this correctly.

although the light was on before the car was driving smoothly, it's only since the garage has replaced the air filter and maf that this problems have occurred.

99% of the time it is the O2 sensor that has picked up burnt oil that turns the engine lamp on. I will find the other post on the oil in the air intake.

While all this is going on the gearbox will not respond correctly

I hope it's not the oil in the loom problem mate would be worth getting the modified loom if it's not contaminated. As you look at the engine from the front of the car there is a cover at the very front of the block with a merc badge on it take this off. Then you have a round bit. That's the magnet unplug the connector on the magnet and check for any sign of dampness. That's where the prob starts I know mine was the same good luck and merry Christmas

thanks very much for all the help and pointers, i will take this back to the garage and let them have a look, although they have replaced the maf i suspect they haven't cleaned any of the surrounding areas/pipes which is still contaminating the new maf?

apart from that the car drives like a dream and is a joy to have.

This is the post that you can tie in with your problem

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=33993&highlight=engine+breathing+230k

You can do further checks on jims post,,, first you must find if there is any oil inside the MAF and I think that you will find that there is.

Drivinggod above had one of the 2 problems that you have

That'll be James in Portugal ;) not Jim in Essex, although I have to say that Jim did a hell of a lot of groundwork and helped supply a lot of info which lead to me creating the DIY post by taking pictures as I went when carrying out the work.

best regards
James Mc
