HI Guys,

New to all this however, wonder if anyone can help??? PLEASE

CLK 2001 230K auto/tip 59k miles - the car was making a heck of a racket on returning from a journey and eventually 2 miles from my mechanic it locked up at the back and no drive. After putting on the ramp my mechanic diagnosed the fault as the diff - he was 'picking out chunks of the planet'. I found a second hand unit on the net (ebay) advertised as for W208 CLK/SLK/ E etc which he swapped over. Ever since there has been a whirring / whinning noise from the back and the car is stuck in limp mode 2nd gear. A local diff/gearbox specialist has just read the code which says 'implausible transmission or slipping' - he erased it went down the road half a mile later it came back up again. He has suggested that it could be something nasty in the transmission.

Any ideas??

Thank You, Kevin

Welcome

You have the wrong diff! i have seen this before, once even from a main dealer!

I would start trying to trace a correct diff!!

Hi Sam (?)

Thank you for your prompt post/reply.

I suspected this may be the case but I am stumped because a main dealer has said that my chassis number brings up a part number that shows 'push-in' prop/drive shafts but my mechanic has said that he had to bolt the shafts as that was the fitting previous - push ins wouldn't match up to the same place?? it is not the first time that Mercedes have given me a part number (from the VIN number) to one that fits my car. It happened with an alternator.

The guy who sold me the diff says the part number of the one supplied matches my year/model#.

The old diff unfortunately went into the scrap when my mechanic took it off so I can't physically take it anywhere to find the match??

sorry guys had to go for dinner - and running late as usual!! and thank you. Just realised that during a recent house move I have left my document file with some other junk at the parents house so will pick up in the morning and ping over the VIN asap.

Have to say, I am impressed with this service. I was starting to tear big clumps of hair out. Catch up soon - thanks again
