Hi All,

I have a 2001 CLK230 Kompressor. It has been diagnosed with a faulty camshaft actuater, it's noisy when you accelerate and decelerate at the same point in the rev range, around 2000rpm. It makes a funny rattling noise for about 2-3 seconds.

Anyway my question is how long does it take to fit a new one and is it an easy job? Is there any special tools needed?

The part costs 300.00 pounds to replace!! My car has only done 48K miles and is out of warranty so Mercedes won't cover it even when they have sold 7000 of thse worlwide in the last 6 months!!

Has anybody else had any problems?

Thanks,
David.:-D

Sorry I have never heard of a Cam shaft actuator. MB have not as well as there is nothing on such a device mentioned.
The camshaft is operated by the timing chain, there is a mod for this.
Everything has whats know as a resonating frequency, I would think its more timing chain or sprocket problems

cam actuat

HI

There is a problem with this COMPONENT. Ask your dealer to submit esku lab re noisey cam actuator its a bit of a pig to do yourself. parts required are cam sprocket and spring as well as new location bolts. MB should cover this but in recent months MB have been avioding responsibilitie on known faults. GOOD LUCK

Bought the part today and it is being fitted tommorow at Mercedes First in Nottingham. 550.00 pounds all in. I can't be bothered to argue with Mercedes about a claim etc.

If anybody else gets this problem a good way of checking that it is the actuator is to pull up the plastic cover at the front of the cam cover and when the engine is switched off pull off the wire connected to the actuator. When you restart the noise should have stopped if it is a faulty cam actuator.

Thanks.

Its for the variable camshaft timing. Fitted to the Inlet camshaft. Been around for years since the 111 engine was introduced.

Thanks,I will look it up and see what MB call it. on the V6 engines ie 112 and V8 and 12 its done from the sprocket on the crankshaft, this also releases any oil preasure in the main gallery, when the engine has stopped, but the timing chain presure is held by a one way valve.Makes starting easy.
