Hi
Today while driving (admittedly a bit hard) suddenly there was a loss of power from the engine. It felt like there was a long lasting power lag. When I depressed the accelerator the engine would gradually increase in speed. The car is automatic and would not change down at speed but would change down when I had to stop and move off. At first it felt like the kompressor belt had broken, I stopped switched off the engine. The kompressor belt was intact, after starting up again all the cars performance was back as if nothing had happened.

Can any one please tell me what and why this happened.

have you had dirty fuel anytime - not usual garage / chain, on holiday in different area of the country, i wonder or left it too late for a refill - dirt in the tank? also do you use UL 95 or UL 98 - 98 gives better performance. i have the same model - X reg, what's your's. i tend to treat myself once every so many tanks for the 98 stuff and car really goes. have noticed abit of rough starting - starts ok, but sounds as it it's going to die and then gets going again. never lost power in that situation, not overtaking were you?

have you checked the W and S switch near the gearstick - need it in S (for standard)

have you have checked your engine levels checked - oil etc; car needs a service??

give a post on how you get on

CLK Man

PS read that the car learns to adapt to your driving, always tend to tell difference once back from the brother - he tends to rally it, whilst i tend to drive sensibly - with the odd fast stretch - is yours back from someone else?

Hi Thanks for responding, I may have had help on the general forum http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=17006 . It looks like it might be the mass air meter. I have bought one eBay a "brand new genuine BOSCH unit" I am told for £105.00. I will fit it as soon as I get it. I will let you know on this forum.

I was told by my garage that the pipe shown in picture is the one that was causing the stuttering. The garage actually had to suck air from it and then put it back on its place with help of the clip shown in the picture. ( the red area in picture is the block that says KOMPRESSOR if you open the engine compartment).

I was also told before the guy found that pipe that it maybe the air actuator. I called Dronsfieds Mercedes (http://www.dronsfields.com/index.php) and they quoted me £125 for an air actuator. But I never replaced it as after changing the air flow meter and getting the pipe right sorted the problem. I actually got Air Flow Meter from dronsfied as well and they charged me £155 (including VAT and delivery) for new one, which I thought was quiet reasonable.

After changing the Mass Air Flow, have you seen any difference in your car acceleration ?!? plus, Do check spark plugs and the cables before you go for any expensive part replacement. Also did you ran the diagnostic software ?!? normally merc garages have the STAR diagnostics software that can actually indicate the part number which is faulty !! but they indicated air actuator in my case. And after the pipe fixture. The problem stopped so I didn’t replace the actuator that the software was indicating.

Hope it helps. Lemme know how it goes.

I have had the air mass meter replaced today by the local indie. Car is running much better now.
Cost for parts was £60+vat
Have the fault diagnosis, saves a lot time and money in the long run.

CLK 230k 1998. No luck, I had the star diagnostics done today at a indie. One fault that came up is the compressor clutch not engaging. It could also not be engaged remotely.
The car has to go back for further investigation. I wonder if anyone has hade a fault like this and what was the remedy, that may help cut the investigation time. Thanks.

Part suplier needed

Fault found turns out it is the compressor clutch.
I am looking for a genuine Mercedes part, 1110970128 COMPRESSOR COUPLING. Does anybody know a supplier can contact, or is Mercedes the only ones that can supply this part. Will Mercedes sell it to Joe public?

All parts are available and sold over the counter, I believe the clutch has been dropped from later models.
