Not much to see in the link.

I think it would be best to go to MB dealer and get the lamp unit that you have lost, then you will see how it is fitted on.

Your mb dealer will know the part number, just take along the car VIN number

sorry I cant be more helpful

Try a search on this and the USA forum. I'm sure I read about CLK's w209 up to 2004 having an issue with the 3rd brake light cracking and falling out. I'm almost certain they were being replaced under warranty with a new design.
The reason I remember is because mine is a December 2005 model and I reckoned it must have the new design in from new and I would not be affected.

They tend to do that.

A new light is around £70.

Poor design, the attaching clamp puts too much stress on the lamp and the red part separates and fall off leaving the rest in the boot.

So much for that theory, mine fell out this weekend.
I was impressed that the dash display told me the 3rd brake light was not working though, nice touch. Although a warning that half of it is inside the boot lid and the rest on the driveway would be more apt.

I phoned Stratstone Mercedes (Giffnock) to arrange for a new one to be fitted under warranty, but as helpful as ever, they refuse to admit it is a common fault & want me to take a 40 mile round trip to let them "assess" it before they will order a new light. The car is more helpful than the dealer.

Mine was changed under Service Contract Plus by MB Hull, no problem, no quibble.

In case the dealer doesn't want to play ball, the replacement is fairly easy.

Open boot (obviously!).
Remove hazard warning triangle
Remove the press-stud fixings for the lining on the boot lid and hazard triangle holder.
Remove lining and holder.
The lamp assembly is held in by 2 nuts (8mm if I remember correctly) - undo these. (the spaces between the inside boot frame are a little tight but not too bad to get your hands in)
Pull the wiring connector apart
Remove broken assembly (assembly sits on outside of boot lid).
Fit new lamp assembly and new rubber gasket into\onto hole.
Hold lamp assmebly on outside of car whilst re-fixing the nuts back on.
When tightening the bolts, just past finger tight then a bit more (approx 1 full spanner turn or so after finger tight is about right) - any more and the new assembly will crack
Re-attach the wiring connector
Re-fit lining and hazard triangle holder
Wonder where one of the press fixings went???
Put hazard triangle back in holder

Takes about 30 mins tops.

Fortunatly mine fell off whilst on the drive and I had both parts so I managed to araldite it back together easily enough, saving £80. I had to recover the LED unit from the boot but once I had, It was an easy job and took approx 30 mins.
