Hi

Hope someone can help me here.

I have just purchased a 2003 CLK 320 Cab (New Shape). When buying her I asked the dealer if it was possible to program the car so that when I open it with my key the seat and steering wheel set themselves to my memory settings and when my wife uses her key it goes to hers. I was told no.

However, while in the dealership waiting for them to fetch the car after having a car kit and parking sensors fitted, I discovered (by reading the book lol) that it is possible.

Ace i thought, only problem is the book doesn't really tell you how to do it.

So I argued the toss with the salesman that it could be done and we fiddled about a bit and presto when I put my key in my settings were automatically recovered. Most impressed were the salesman and his mate as they had no clue it could be done.

Anyhoo, all was well till i got home and tried to set my wife's key up. Not so easy. My key worked fine, but everytime i put her key in, the seat jammed me into the roof! It went fully forward but did not drop back to her settings.

I tried and tried but could not get it to work and in the end i had a hell of a game turning it off. Everytime I turned key dependency off on her key it turned mine off and vice versa. I tried a master reset of the operating system but that didn't work either. In the end I gave up and turned key dependence off on both keys.

However I want to use this feature and don't see why I shouldn't!

So, can anyone tell me how to set it up properly?

I should point out that the easy entry system, which is supposed to roll the seat back and lift the steering wheel as I get out doesn't seem to work either. It lifts the wheel but doesn't move the seat. So perhaps the seats need a master reset or some such thing?

One other thing that doesn't function is opening the windows from the key. This has been confirmed by the dealer who are going to fix it but I don't know if it has a bearing on the seat business.

Two other things while I'm here. Can i open or close the roof or both from the key - the book says I can but it doesn't seem to work and can the folding mirrors be programmed to fold upon removing the key - again the book says you can but I don't seem to have the option in the programming section of the operating system?

If you can help me you will make me a very very happy man!!

The window opening works with the IR bit of the key not the RF side, so it has to have a clear line of site to the receivers in the door handles. It has to be pretty close as well for it to work.
I don't know about the memory settings, I just use the buttons on the door before I get in. Didn't even know it was possible (don't think it is on mine)

Worth a look through the book :)

Thanks for the info on the window opening, technician checked the operation and it is faulty. Doesn't work on either key so problem with the handle/car.

Worth a look through your book or on your dashboard to see about the key dependency. Dealer argued black was blue with me that it wasn't possible.

Not sure what your dash looks like but if you have convenience listed in the operating system you control with the steering wheel and an option of key dependence i'd bet it can be done :)

There's an interactive manual for all new mercs HERE

Just scroll down the page for your model.

A lot of the stuff you mention will be on here....did a search on mine before I bought it :)

Have to bear in mind though that some of the stuff may be disabled in the OS.

The normal way to do it is to set the seat and wheel for you and have the key turned to 2 enter it into say memory 1. let your wife get in with her key turn to 2 and she the adjust the settings for her in say memory 2. if it is going to work, thats the only way that you can do it.

Thanks Malcolm

That's what we have done and the result is that her key jams us into the roof despite programming her setting in :)

Another odd thing that happens when key dependence is on is that if my key is in (I'm on programme 3) and i turn the memory button to 1 (my wife's setting) and press the button, nothing moves except the drivers mirror, which points at the floor! This happens vice versa too :)

Strange huh?

To open or close the roof you have to point the key straight at the receiver in the driver's door handle and be no more than a foot or so away - if you let go of the open/close button, move away or just point it away, operation will stop immediately as a safety feature.

Programming the mirrors to always fold in has to be done by the dealer, there has been some discussion on here as to why this is, one suggestion was that the motors aren't robust enough to fold/unfold so often.

Thanks John

Good info on the roof thank you. I guess that the reason it doesn't work is the same reason the windows won't open from the key either. Will discuss your points with the dealer :)
