Hi
Does anybody have any idea on the reliablity of the catalytic converter fitted on the CLK320 cab -2001 model - I've recently had a failure and i'm wondering if this has happened to anyone the car has barely done 5000 miles on the clock the MB garage in colindale cannot do it under warrantlyas the car is a european bought car -

Also they are simply unable to tell me why this equipment on such a car has failed
Can anyone help with with this they

Hi

If by fail you mean that it starts to rattle under the car. Yes this is a fairly common problem if you have not had the job done yet ask your local dealer to ESKU the claim (GOODWILL) even as an import I would guess that you would get a contribution. If this fails get onto MB customer services a KAT should not break up at this mileage.

Catalytic converter rattle

I know this is well after the post, but perhaps if might help others if I linked it? My cat is rattling as well. I assume it's breaking up, though I'm disapointed it started immediately after my warranty expired, at 55,000 miles. Does anyone know the best (ie cheapest) place to get these from?

well, you might have seen my other posts in the engine section.... the cat on my e200 W210 started rattling last weekend..... at 113K miles

Word that I have is that you need to buy a direct fit replacement, but not neccessarily a MB one. MB are looking for ?835 +VAT and GSF want ?350 +VAT. Fitting of course goes on top of that but seems simple so shouldn't cost much.

I'm told that the universal Cats are not all that great and will get you through the NCT/MOT but often go evne within a year.

On my car it would be very difficult to fit a universal cat because of the way the piping is laid out.

The cat on my 2001 SLK320 went at 15k just before the warranty ran out. It has now gone again at 23k after only 18 months. The dealer refuses any goodwill payment and says it's not faulty manufacture. This is nonsense. There's a problem with these cats and there's no point in just sticking another one for well over £1k. Not impressed.
