CLK 320 convertible roof problem

Getting worried now... My roof operation has been erratic over the last few days. It went down OK yesterday after a few attempts but then would not come up again a few hours later! I reset the ignition a few times and up she came. Last night I tried again but nothing doing, so I reset the headrests up and down a few times - and then the roof worked, up and down a few times no problem.

Today the roof is not interested in going down at all - So I thought I would reset the headrests again. This time they made a graunching noise as they came up and now they don't work anymore either.

I can hear all the clicking relays as and when the switch is pressed but no action.

Any help appreciated as I am starting to see pound signs in my sleep....

You might try pushing up the boot divider and then pulling it back down again. The sensors which make sure the boot divider is in place before allowing the roof to move can be a bit over-sensitive on mine some days, refusing to let the roof move if the divider isn't in exactly the right place.

Thanks Jon - I have tried the boot divider relay (which might be faulty I suppose) but am going to strip the boot out and check the pump relays, the pump, and the pump oil levels - failing that; it's off to an independent to have a look at it. Let's hope it isn't the pump at £1500...

Why not just have the fault codes read out. And take it from there, we can give you the info from the read out

Can I ask; What do you mean by 'having the fault codes read out'?

Where can I get the fault codes from (I assume you mean from a MB specialist)

Take the car to a dealer and they will hook it up to STAR (MB Diagnostics computer) and read all the error codes stored in the car. They may charge for this.

My CLK is an 'S' plate 1998 - Will Star diagnostics still work?

Have just got back from Parkhams - Their Star diognostic indicates a 'low voltage' problem probably compounded by the fact that the headrests have fully extended (fired...) and we can't retract them, so the car is in for the day mid June.

Tried that... Doesn't work. I did have this problem a few years back when they decided to raise as I went over a humpback bridge (WTF!!!!) and I couldn't get them back down, I left them for a day or so and they sorted themselves out, unfortunately not this time.

It was a relay and the roof is working perfectly. Paul at Parkhams was brilliant and sorted it all out within an hour - We opened the boot, popped the roof and shut the bootlid in order to open the roof fully (so we could retract the headrests), couldn't get the roof over the headrests at all so back to plan B - Problem... Boot locked out by the computer because the roof was up (ish) and my key didn't work in the lock... bugger! Fortunately Paul managed to replace the relay after removing the bass speaker from the front - phew!
