It sounds as if your key code is now out of sync. with the car. Basically the car security no longer recognises it.

I'd use your spare for now. Personally I don't know if it's possible to resync. the key yourself, maybe some of the others could say. Personally I'd take it to the dealers and get them to sort it.

clk 320 key fob

Thanks for your reply

I havent got a spare key, so i have been to the dealer today and they have told it may need a new key at a cost of £130 +vat they also said it may need a new ignition unit at a cost of £400 + vat but they also wont £95 + vat to diagnose the problem first. So if anybody has any other alternative please let me no.

A few things here.

Steering will not release = wrong key or no power to EIS ign switch.

This one looks like your fault

Key can be inserted but not turned and cant be locked with remote

the cause is that the key was left in longer than 30 mins

remedy all it says is remove the key and insert again also please read owners manual

Other than this it looks like a new switch is needed, not cheap possible codes that could be erased providing there is no fault

I locked myself out once and eventually found that the ignition switch/lock was not all the way “off”.
I must have pulled the “key” out too fast before I turned it all the way off.
Resetting the switch to the off position did the trick.
