i thought my head gasket was gone and was told , so i had lots of oil in the coolant. a merc mechanic said to check your oil cooler, and to bypass it by taking off the coolant pies and joining the together and to see if oil comes out of the water pipes on the cooler, and it did, so got a new cooler from mers £86 , and that saved £2500 for a gasket

That happened to my dad's Passat, the dealer even charged £160 to diagnose the fault and said it was a head gasket and it would be £1700.

Took it to an Indie who checked the oil cooler, found it to be leaking and fixed it for £150. The dealer wouldnt even refund the original diagnosis claiming there was no proof that they were wrong!

Its taught me to always check the smallest things first (and to never go to a main dealer)
