Now had my CLK 320 for 3 weeks now and really happy with it. On a long drive yesterday noticed that the temp gauge slowly oscillates from 82 - 88 degrees. This is obviously the thermostat opening and closing but have never noticed on my other cars and thought that the thermostat "settles" into a position to regulate the temp for a given load. Am I correct and have a dodgy thermostat or is this normal MB behaviour

Thanks

I've noticed

that the slightest prolonged incline gives a little boost, and the slightest prolonged dip gives a little drop. Was the road you drove undulating in a gentle way?

the gauges are normally quite steady, could be faulty transmitter, don't worry too much at this stage, the opening and closing of the thermostat is not that fast.

mine only gets that high

after about 15-20 mins of stationary traffic. When it's rolling along, it never goes above 85 ish uphill, and does drop to about 75 going downhill. That's a three-mile long steep hill on the M62 that I drive over a lot.
As Malcolm said, probably not a lot to worry about.
