This is my first time on the forum so please be patient .

I have just purchased a CLK320 1999, after owning a C180 (1994) for 4years & i would relish any comments good or bad.

The CLK 320 is a foul car I'm afraid, I went into a dealer in Plymouth to have a look at a new one of these, I really liked the looks of this car and if the drive matched the look It would be a certain buy.
Unfortunately the dealer refused me a test drive because I came into the show room in my Jeans and T shirt.
Anyway I later tested a second hand one and the handling was agricultural, the power was terrible and the auto box was just plain old fashioned. Absolute rubbish in short, I ended up buying a BMW M5 which is fantastic.

Andy,

The CLK and M5 are like chalk and cheese- you can't compare. One is a coupe and one is a saloon for a start, let alone the "M" factor.

The CLK is not a bad car and was quite a good rival to the E36 BMW. Like E36 it's now been replaced with a newer model.

The problems with the old - if you can call them "problems"- were mainly insensitive, woolly, steering due to archaic recirc-ball arrangement; poor rear space; so-so build quality (trim); and not much kit as standard.

However the auto gearbox is quite good (merc ones are generally the best) and the car is and was very popular (I almost bought a 430).

I have reservations about merc's engineering philosphy with a v6 at 90 degrees and the egine is not as sweet a a BMW straight-6, but having driven one, it's really not bad.

If mercs are so bad and by the looks of it your array of cars don't include any mercs ... why in gods name are you posting on a mercedes forum?!!

What a log head. I hope you get a lot of pleasure from your new motor. I am also a new owner of a merc (SLK320) and love it. As for Beamer owners I along with many others on the fiatcoupe.net forum have our own opinions. It was always a pleasure to let the Turbo burn them of the road with my Fiat Coupe uprated to240 bhp. The look on thier faces always brought a smile as I passed.

its the german spelling of supercharger.

it compresses the air and then forces it into your engine. this gives a smaller engine more air which means it acts like a bigger engine. or more power if you like.

Hi all,

I am a proud owner of a clk 320 year 2000 having owned a BMW previously. The Merc is a great car, it is smooth, powerfull and has a solid feel to it. I know things can go wrong with it, but this happens on ALL cars.

Ownership can be expensive, fuel cost, service etc.. but if you shop around for Approved Service Centres (Waterhouse Mercedes Benz in Chelmsford is great for price and service) you can get good prices.

I do sometimes miss the thrill of driving a BMW, but the smooth ride, comfort and image of the Merc can't be beaten.

Enjoy......

I've been a 95 C200 auto owner for the past 4 years and very happy too. My recent service has revealed various problem areas such as rust (exhaust, gearbox pipes), traces of on engine block etc, various fluids need changing etc.

So I think It's time to buy a newer car. I'm thinking of a CLK auto 200Komp - 220Komp, year 2000 - 2002. My budget is £12k. Can the CLK elegance match the ride quality of a C-class Elegance? Any advice from experienced CLK owners please?
