Hi all,

I am new to the forum and looking to buy a CLK430. I prefer the CLK 55 AMG but the insurance / fuel prices are too high at the moment!

Is there anything to look out for especially on the CLK in general? I will be buying one registered before 31st March 2001 because of the new RFL implications...

When is the timing belt service due? Is it expensive? What is the mpg like? It is not a real problem for me but i am interested to know.

Any information will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Kerry

When is the timing belt service due?

No timing belt its chain driven, if it starts to rattle its usaully a good time to change it. 100k or there abouts, depends on servcing and the way its driven I suppose.

Is it expensive?
Yes

What is the mpg like?

Late 20's on a run, 9 if driven like a nutter.

If you don't get the 55, you'll regret it. You'll never know what the kick in the back feels like. My insurance is only £440ish for my 55 so yours may be even lower.

Fuel consumption wise between the 430 and the 55 will be negligable, I would,nt think you would be saving much in insurance either.
Though the 430 is a nice car it will always be a compromise, you pick up 55's starting from £6000ish now.

I had a CLK430 2000 Cab - mass air flow meter goes on them and can be expensive to fix.
Rust is also an issue, as are the pixels failing on the instrument displays.

Many thanks for the info. I guess I should test drive a few 430's and 55's to make sure I wouldn't be disappointed with the 430. I wonder why Mercedes made 2 similar spec V8's for one car? I guess the price for the AMG new was much higher than the 430?

Remember the AMG will have higher servicing costs and insurance vs the 430. The 55 is c. 350bhp, the 430 is a good deal short of that @ 280ishBHP so the performance gap will be noticeable so the spec wise their is a gap that would to an extent justify the premium of the 55, try both to see whether the 55 is the car for you.
