Must say I've gone from being over the moon with my CLK to total dejection.

It is a 2.7 (03) with auto tiptronic gearbox, and herein lies the problem.
Having show symptoms of slipping, or not engaging at all, I took it into my local dealership and they replaced the valve block. 130 miles later it broke down with same fault as before and we were relayed home.
The dealership now tell me it needs a new gearbox at a cost of £3,900!

I bought the car from them some 16 months ago in which time I have done 14,000 miles with the total mileage on the car at 50,000 with a full Merc service history. It has gone past the standard 12 month used car warranty.

The dealer is being sympathetic (trying to see if Mercedes will "make a contribution") but sympathy wont buy me a new gearbox which quite simply should not fail at such low mileage in a car of such quality.

I just hopep that any "contribution" that Mercedes come up with is a big one!

Mercedes contribution

In 1989 I had a 1986 500SL with 13K miles. Gearchange was rather 'notchy' if that's a real word!

MB at Brentford agreed with me and they fitted a new box for very little.

Be optimistic and if they won't do something reasonable, contact Milton Keynes in writing.

We're all routing for you!

when i was in the dealer network, the first thing we changed was always the electric pack, then valve body, if that didnt work it was the box, 9 out of 10 times it was always a speed sensor on the electric pack, agree with the rest, lets hope it dont cost you to much!!!

Ask Them Why And How It Has Failed, Could Be Glycol In The Oil? If So Then They Should Really Have Checked For This Given Your Symptoms When They First Looked At It, We Currently Have An E Class In With Same Symptoms Which Has Oil Contamination, The Box Is Being Overhauled With New Converter And Radiator,

Thanks for the suggestion .....Apparently they did the Glycol test when it first went in.....negative. That is why they went for the valve block

MB surely HAS to make a contribution on this one. 50,000 miles and FMBSH!
Keep us informed as my car's just a year newer.
As a bit of ammo', tell the dealer that the forum members are getting ugly!

Latest news ....Dealers have been very helpful. They have been onto Mercedes who initially didn't think they should pay anything. However....Mercedes have now offered to pay £2600 out of the £3900 total. The dealership are suggesting that the initial repair bill of £560 will now go towards the total I have to pay...so I now need to find another £800 approx. Much better than nearly four grand....but I still maintain it shouldn't have happened in the first place....
