CLK Folding roof problems

Getting worried now... My roof operation has been erratic over the last few days. It went down OK yesterday after a few attempts but then would not come up again a few hours later! I reset the ignition a few times and up she came. Last night I tried again but nothing doing, so I reset the headrests up and down a few times - and then the roof worked, up and down a few times no problem.

Today the roof is not interested in going down at all - So I thought I would reset the headrests again. This time they made a graunching noise as they came up and now they don't work anymore either.

I can hear all the clicking relays as and when the switch is pressed but no action.

Any help appreciated as I am starting to see pound signs in my sleep....

Sorry - It's a 1998 (S) CLK 320 Convertible with no warranty at all.

I had a problem in that one day my roof was OK and the next nothing... I was getting some clicks on operation (as you mention). There was some history of the roof playing up before I acquired the car. A New pump (not cheap) and battery had already been fitted by the previous owner.

The actual fault turned out to the the relay fitted to the roof pump. I am not saying that is definitely your problem but it is the same relay as fitted in the boot near the battery for the fuel pump. Swap them over. If the roof works but the car won't start then you have the culprit.

Since swapping the relay things have been good on the roof operation.

I think the part number is: A0025421319 (fitted to the pump)
Also there is one fitted in the main relay box (under the bonnet)
Same part number I believe.

Thanks James - I have a feeling that it's the relay aswell. I shall swop them as suggested and report back.

Did you find that your headrests were affected as well (didn't raise or lower)?

Jamesmc - There is an excellent HOWTO here at

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=37628

Which shows how to access the relays, pump and reservoir etc. Problem is with a roof stuck in the closed position I can't follow these instructions cos I can't get in from the top so to speak!

Did you manage to access everything from the boot just by stripping out all the carpet and panels etc.

Actually, I went through the routine of stripping out the boot/pump cover before I was aware of the 'howto' on this (a mech approach) but having done that figured out that (as long as you know where the relay is, and the roof pump oil filler cap for that matter) you can do a few things (including swapping out the relay) in situ without taking the main (rear boot) cover off.

Have just got back from Parkhams - Their Star diognostic indicates a 'low voltage' problem probably compounded by the fact that the headrests have fully extended (fired...) and we can't retract them, so the car is in for the day mid June.

It was a relay and the roof is working perfectly. Paul at Parkhams was brilliant and sorted it all out within an hour - We opened the boot, popped the roof and shut the bootlid in order to open the roof fully (so we could retract the headrests), couldn't get the roof over the headrests at all so back to plan B - Problem... Boot locked out by the computer because the roof was up (ish) and my key didn't work in the lock... bugger! Fortunately Paul managed to replace the relay after removing the bass speaker from the front - phew!

CLK convertible - roof and boot stuck!

Hi
Can anyone help? I clipped a kerb with my 2003 CLK convertible, and the jolt has dislodged the lock on the roof. It's a catch 22 because I can't open the boot to open the boot partition because the roof thinks it's part open, and I can't open the roof to close it again and lock it properly because the boot partition is closed.... and my xmas shopping is in the boot! we've tried the manual unlocking of the boot, that doesn't work either.
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks a lot, Deb

Get an MB STAR to diagnose, the system is very complicated instead of trial and error.

Suspected as much - thanks for the advice! Deb

If you are desperate to get your stuffs off the boot, look at the owner manual, it tells how to move it manually. If you haven't got one search this or other websites where you can download, I remember it was mentioned.

Cautious: you need two people to do it, and if you are not careful, it may collapsed after 20mins and severed your arms.

No women and children around the area while you are working on it.

It best to leave it to the experts.

I had problem opening the boot, due to misalignment, closing and opening the roof may helps.
