Does anybody know how to take out the instrument panel to replace some bulbs on a 1998 CLK. Is it the same as an SLK?

Hi there,
You can take out the instrument cluster, in to ways.
Firstly using the merc tools or a self made tools which you slide down both sides of the cluster between the black cluster suround and the dash plastic. turn 90 degress so it latches into the cluster and gently pull out the cluster. The tools are two thin ( 2mm ), 6 inch long metal rods, with the ends bent over at approx 100 degress. only the last 5mm or so is bent over to act like hooks. This has been know to crack the cluster glass or chip of the plastic if its a tight one.

Secondly, you can lower the dash under pannel reach up and push out the cluster from behind, this also can be awkward!

Hope thats helpfull

basically its just a push fit so push/pull it out.

As Jberks, but some inexperienced folk have broken the glass on pulling it out, it makes the job expensive, thats why many say push

What can I say........
What an informative web site.
Twice, I have now used the knowledge from the MB Owners Forum to fix problems on my 1998 CLK 3.20 sports Cabriolet.
The first was "How to clean the Maf" which promtly cured a smal missfire and yesterday, fixed the Bulb in the instrument cluster.
A small back light bulb had gone out, which lit the outside temp. All the pixals worked but were dim.
I sat in the car, looking at the dash after reading how to take the cluster out by ELLSY TANNER's thread, woundering how to push the rods either side in order to remove the binacale.
I happened to pull on the lower edge of the plastic suround and to my amazement the entire binacale slide out!!!
I did not remove the wireing plugs as I could easly get at all the bulbs. As it happened, the bulb had not blown, just a quarter turn on the white holder brought the bulb back to life.
With the bulb now working, I carefull slid the Binicale back into position.
Time taken approx. 10 mins.
Which makes a mockery of the price £ 285.00 plus VAT, I had been quoted from the MB dealer in the morring, to change the bulb.

So many thank again to the MBF........

Chris..........
