Hi, I hope someone can help with what I feel is a weird fault!

I had the usualy bulb malfunction light come up the other day and after a quick look found the rear fog not working, but on further investigation noticed that the internal indicator near the light switch was suggesting my rear fogs were on even though the lights were off. I had the kids check the brake lights and the 3rd brake light isn't working either... finally, at the same time my boot will not open whilst the car is unlocked by pressing the release botton on the boot lid... the only way to open it is eith using the remote or the release inside the car..

Sorry if this is long winded!

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Just in case you are not aware, there is only one rear fog light, the NS is'nt wired in. The centre brake light is not detected on the bulb failure system, so what lights don't work? Start the engine & go through ALL the lights slowly. The failure light only comes on when it actually knows a bulb is'nt working, thus enabling you to find the culprit. Rear tail lights have 2 bulbs per side & dont forget number plate lights. As for the boot problem, the boot is released via a vacuum system & microswitches. The fact that it works off the key remote & the interior switch, points to a microswitch problem in the boot handle itself, unless, of cause, the barrel is turned to the "off" position ( horizonal) when it should be vertical.

thanks for the reply type49

I checked the lights earlier and have found that the rear fog light, license plate lamps, reversing lamp and high level brake lamp to be out. The rear lights and brake lights are ok. Also the interior light in the boot is very dim.

The warning comes on as soon as the car is started as does the little fog lamp on indicator under the light switch. Could this be a relay issue??? I'm really stuck and dont trust my local dealer not to rip me off!

Thanks in advance.

So is the rear fog light illumination/warning light next to the light switch itself being lit slightly without the fogs on, or am I reading it wrong? If so, it sounds like an earth problem or perhaps the boot wiring is chaffing around the hinge area. Where's your local dealer?

Yes the lamp near the switch is illuminated!!! It's got worse now as I can't start the car... and with the boot lid open I have a fully illuminated dash even though the key is in my pocket!!! RAC call out I think!!! If its a controller issue can disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it resolve?

I think that the rear SAM may have gone down with all of this rain its possible that some dampness has got in. On the big down pour over the new year,my SL boot could not cope.

The rear SAM controls all of the cars lighting, the battery is being drained or the CAN bus has turned off the DAS.

Thanks Television... this all sounds plausible... if only I knew what any of it meant.. :) Sorry I'm a complete non-machanic when it comes to cars today.... is this something that would reset it'self (battery disconnect) or is it a garage job... sounds expensive..any ideas?

I feel sure that water has got into the rear SAM (signal aquasision module) if this is the case it can lock out the DAS (drive autherize System) via the CAN bus. At this stage I would leave it overnight with the battery disconnected, and see what happens in the morning, is the battery flat, what happens when you turn the key:

Can the guy that Type 49 mentioned come out to you.

Thanks all

Well I left it overnight although I didnt disconnect the battery, and it has started. Great diagnostics television!!! The lamp warning is still coming on so I'll have to get it looked at.. is the SAM and expensive part? Any ideas? Is it likely to lock the DAS again? and if so is it possible to happen while it's being driven?

Thanks again
