i have a 2004 clk 270cdi 6 spd manual which went out of warranty in january. recently when setting off in 1st it has jumped out of gear back into neutral with quite a bang. it had only done this 2 or 3 times until tonight when the same thing happened only this time the gear lever is in the neutral position but will not move to select a gear, and the box is stuck in first gear. on the plus side (if there is one).....the clutch still works, so i can drive around in 1st to my heart's content. is this a linkage or selector problem or is it good byegearbox?

Not all bad then!

I hope it is a conrod/linkage problem, but jumping out of gear often means internal problems. Some of the people who actually know what they're talking about will post up soon.

Fingers crossed mate!

Maybe

Hmm, never had one of these apart but the locking ring bit with the TVR would have been the mainshaft locknut. If the nut on the end of the mainshaft comes adrift it allows the entire mainshaft gear clusters to wander up and down the shaft. Moving the selectors (via the gearstick) would have little effect as the selected gear will move along with the selector.
I would have this looked at asap. My advice would be to get the car to an indy post haste. If its a selector rod - excellent, if not you could destroy the box by driving it around like this.

Your Mercedes
2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
this is what it says.

Arresting forces of sliding sleeve to weak.

the synchromesh element with sleeve on gear box 761.60x to 716.63x

As the gearbox has to come out,not a small job

If it was mine and had the above wording "too weak" then I would force them to do it under guarantee as it is not your fault that this has gone.

Thanks for that advice malcolm. i haven't had any dealings with Mercedes, but i guess this will involve some sort of battle. My car is out of warranty, so i assume that i am going down the line of this being a manufacturing defect that mercedes are obviously aware of and as such it is for them to put right irrespective of warranty period. am i barking up the right the tree? if so will they agree to this before commencing the work? don't want to get a dealership bill (gulp!) and then start arguing about whether i pay or not.
Also, today i spoke to a transmission repair place and they said that they have had quite a few of these 6 speed boxes in for this and it is due to wear in the gear selection mechanism and merc only supply these as a replacement unit. they will do the job for 400 quid if i remove the 'box myself. does that sound like a reasonable assessment and cost? thanks
