i have a 2001 2.3 clk elegance on the steering wheel is a phone symbal the car has no phone would this be able to be used for a mobile somehow ?

Only if you have the correct phone retro fitted to the car

The button is intended to be used with the phone prewire system which was a pricey option and probably not fitted on your car.
Some firms like Parrot make adaptors for their bluetooth kits that will utilise the wheel buttons but I believe they will only work with later models as MB changed the networking system at some point.
Anyway - they work on my car and you're not missing much !
