im looking at getting a new summer car and narrowed the choices down to either a late Clk500 or E500. What are people thoughts on the two cars and is there much to choose between them reliability wise?

Would like a clk 63 but the price and potential engine issues worry me!!

I'm not totally up to speed on trials and tribulations of comparing differing models. But, I am of the belief that either would be a good choice.

In very general terms the E class will be a higher quality than the C class platforms

I had 2 CLK's not 500"s both great cars. Looked at a E class Coupe as a replacement & was put off by the size of the boot.
My wife doesn't travel light so bought a E350CDI saloon, which we are very please with.

OP, I see you already have an E of some kind.

Not clear whether you want fixed head or convertible? Either way I imagine most E will be quite a bit more than most CLK.

As a Summer car I took the view that while we all want it, reliability isn't the utmost importance if there are other cars to get one to work. Therefore got an older car. Pre March 2006 road tax much cheaper, BTW

I got a 2005 CLK 500 convertible just over 6 years and around 27k miles ago. Stranded once in all that time by a failing CPS. Known fault and cheap fix. My 500 is the M113 V8 engine which beyond minor oil leaks is regarded as (too often used phrase) bulletproof. Mine is quiet and refined but will do 0-60 in 6 all day long which is enough for me, and I would happily drive it to Italy tomorrow if it weren't for lockdown

I've driven the newer 500 engine (in a CLS) and it's significantly more powerful; others might comment on its reliability.

True , we shall see, but soon clk 63 will be less than £15k , prices seem to be taking a beating unfourtunatly

In my 38 years of driving , I must have had 30 plus cars, I currently drive a 987 boxsters , a 944 turbo cab and a landrover discovery sport. I never know quite what I want to so I buy different cars and then I change. I don’t have a merc at the moment and fancy a v8 cab.

It may not be relevant, but I wonder if the steering of the CLK63 was better than the CLK55? We found the CLK55 a little 'numb', although accurate enough. The steering on our W212 is a lot better in that respect. Perhaps the E-Cab will be that much better too? And none of them steer like a Porsche...

I’m not that worried about the handling , it’s about point and squirt and that lovely v8 noise
