Hi all,

Just wanted to get everyones opinion!

Basically, after i sell my CDI, at some point, im thinking of either going for a CLK or a 107 style SL 300.

I cant stand the idea of losing a lot of value in my investment, and thats why im thinking about an SL.

However, i went to have a look at an SL300 today. 1988, with all the usual stuff and a hardtop - At 110000 miles. It was in the hardtop when i got there - I should have asked him to remove before.

Anyway, i noted a few things with the car and was wondering if i should be weary:

1) Engine pressure goes to below 1 on idle and has just had a service. Does reach 3 when accelerating, but for a 3ltr, i wouldnt have expected the pressure to fall that much? My 123/200 1980 doesnt usually fall to 1!

2) Im pretty sure the car has had a full respray at some point. Although a very good job, you could tell by looking around doors etc.

3) Cream leather seats were not hard at all, very springy - is it usual?

4) Last couple of services not at dealer, just a garage.

5) Interior wasnt as good as i would have expected, quite worn.

6) Central locking pump ran on for a long while after locking/unlocking.

My question is, am i going to expect these sorts of issues with every SL i look at under 15K? If so, then ill rule it out.

The car was fair in price, i guess to reflect the above. But my main concern was the engine pressure.

Also, if i stick to the original idea of an early CLK, how much can i expect to lose over the next couple of years...

Thanks

Jay

Try to find a dealer/restorer specialising in 107s. There are one or two out there with cars to chose from. old cars will require some work, but the one you mentioned should probably be nearer £10k than £15k. Also, if you like the later style, around £18k will get you a very nice 320SL (W129). I saw a perfect early one at a main dealer, last week.

If the respray was recent there should be bills to support the work done and be careful that the new paint job isn't covering up rust and poor repairs.

I have a 300E engine and if the weather is warm and in traffic etc, the oil pressure will dip below 0.5 bar (36,000 miles and run on Mobil 1). Oil pressure depends on temperature, idle speed and oil viscocity, but if a slight blip of the throttle brings it back up to 3 bar it should be OK.
