clk speedo can i just swap??

HI all,

i have a 2001 clk convertible, the speedo has developed a fault so i've found a breakers that have a used one, my question is will it just be a straight swap over? i understand the new speedos miles will show on my car (not a problem as the speedo shows more miles than my car and i will include the invoice with the service book) but other than the car showing too many miles will it all work ok? or will it throw out faults and not work?

You just need to find an indie with Star, that can remove the info in your cluster, and transfer it to the new one.

It does sometimes depend on the extras that the car might have, and these may need proggraming in

One could use a firm like speedo fixer to correct the mileage, but there would be little difference there in the cost.

I believe the cluster will need coding before installing. The clusters are coded to the VIN. Also the vehicle mileage is stored elsewhere in the car and if the cluster doesn't match it may lock-up. You might be OK with a cluster showing a higher mileage than the car.

ok - does anyone know 100% have seen on e bay a company that can fix my speedo if i post it off, they also say if i pay extra they will fedex me a loan speedo - so non coded speedos must work.

taking that into account i think i will just get the secondhand speedo and fit it.

unless anyone can think of any reason why not?

Your speedo is joined to the speed pulse signal,, please ask speedofixer if they can do it,, I think that I have some more repairers some,, I will try and post back

According the MB the cluster has to be coded with the car "ID". Now I don't know what this is, is it the VIN? Then why not say so?

Either way when the coded cluster is connected to the car it gets the mileage and options coding from the car. I believe from the EIS.

Thank you for the input, it would be nice to have some hard facts and what happens, I have no info on what happens as my info just gives the transfer onto a new unit, in this case the mileage is transfered

When coding with Star, the mileage will only copy over if the replacement cluster has fewer miles on it than the original. If the replacement cluster mileage is higher, all other info copies over but mileage stays at the higher reading. In my experience, it sometimes happens that the Star machine encounters a fault - I believe that some faulty clusters may be corrupt, and impossible to copy. in this case you can manually input the relavent coding, but you need to know what bits and pieces the car is fitted with - not that complicated really - country code, type of esp system, type of air con... Basic stuff really - about 12 to 15 items to set.

HI all,

have swapped them over and it works all ok speedo wise (wrong miles obviously)

the things that dont work are the phone option and the ability to check oil from the dashboard - if i get the speedo coded on a star will these functions work on the new speedo? if so will the dealer do it at the same time they enable my audio 30 sat nav for dashboard controls?
or is the speedo not able to do the oil check with it coming from a 200 clk and mine being a 320?

as with every control module, yes even the ICM they have to be told what model car they are in, coded, yes a star machine is the only way to code it in!!

hi all,

ok have swapped speedo and been to merc - they did something with Star and now the new speedo works my phone nav oil etc, only problem is the correct miles did NOT copy over so the speedo is showing about 6k too less than my car has done.

i can post the speedo off for £50 and they will input the correct miles for me - only thought is when it comes back will i have to go to merc again or is the nav phone etcunlocked and stays unlocksed???
