Hi My 97 CLK Compresser just died at the side of the road & would not start again. Green Flag told me that my timing chain has probably come off and there will be engine damage ( around £2,000 ). Prior to this the engine was running smooth with no rattles or noises. With a full Mercedes service history could this be possible? Done around 14000mls

Could have snapped! just seemed strange no prior warnings or rattles & no big noise when the engine stopped. Car has been towed to garage. Am waiting with baited breath. Will keep posted on what happens. THANKS.

Do the pistons clear the valves if the camshaft/timing chain breaks on this engine ?

I have seen two chains snap so far in my workshop. Both on CDI engines too. Made hell of a mess.

Hi everyone
Thanks for you interest. I have just heard from the garage its not the top chain thats broken but the bottom one & there could be £3,000.00 but they won't know until the engine is opened up & they dont do engine rebuilds. I am still realy puzzled that there were no nasty noises the car was running very smoothly then it just felt like I had run out of petrol. I had the oil & filters changed last week ( done less than 50 miles ) The car has done about 140 000 & has a full Merc service history & is imaculate. Will keep you updated.

Hi sorry its been so long but Ive just got my car back. Yes my chain did snap & Ive got the bill for a new timing chain, chain tensoiner & a head skim so it looks like it didnt cause to much damage (except to my pocket). The garage that fixed it said they have never seen a chain snap before & even had to buy a special tool for joining the chain. Hope this is of some use to you guys & thanks again for all your advice.
Regards
Dave
