Something a bit strange happened this weekend chaps, I got in the car and turned the wiper stalk, but nothing happened, I couldn't get the wiper to work at all.

I checked all the fuses under the bonnet that correspond to the wash/wipe system and they are all fine, so I'm a bit stumped.

I don't think it's the stalk as the indicators, dip/full beam and also (perhaps crucially) the washer jets all still work.

I thought it may have been because the wiper was frozen to the windscreen but it wasn't at all.

I'm a bit stumped to be honest chaps, does anyone have any suggestions as to what it's likely to be?

cheers
Ben

Dirty contacts in the stalk. Try using some switch cleaner

It's more likely the stalk. I had the wiper stick but everything else worked just like yours do. Changing the stalk fixed all the problems you mentioned.

It usually is the stalk at the end of the day, the back EMF does burn the contacts

thanks for the advice chaps.

I've done some investigating today and it seems that the relay is clicking, and there is power being sent to the motor.

I still haven't had the wiper budge an inch though.

It's looking like it might be the motor itself, unless anyone else has any bright ideas?

If the relay is working it does look like a motor fault as you say, it could be a sticky brush on the motor, give it a good whack and see

Could the wiper motor be running and the wiper arm is not moving, i.e. connection between motor and the mechanism is loose or disconnected… with ignition on and wiper set to slow or fast speed, listen for noise from the motor from outside the car with the engine off and, WITH CARE, try moving the wiper arm across the windscreen… you should not be able to move the wiper arm at all.

Well I tried to move the wiper and it's rock solid, so I'm fairly sure the motor's had it.

I've spoken to a local BMW and Mercedes specialist (who have worked on the car before) and they'll be looking at it tomorrow.

I will keep you all posted.

Just heard back from the garage, yep the motor was knackered, and the mechanism was extremely stiff, which they think caused it.

They've greased it all up and fitted a new motor, all at a cost of just over £400.

Hmm, christmas may be a bit less extravagant than I had originally planned for...

cheers
