Hi

I have a problem with the multi-function indicator stalk on my clk! I had an intermittent problem with the windscreen wipers not working when turned to auto or permanent! Wiggling the stalk would get them working again but now they have stopped working altogether!

The wiper system is fine as they operate fine using the push-in wash wipe! So it is clearly the internal switch!

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this, is it possible to take the switch apart? Guessing it is wear and tear causing misalignment of the contacts somehow!

Car is due an MOT shortly and guess will fail!

A new stalk is the best way, some have managed to clean the contacts but very short lived as the reverse voltage from the motors burns the contact away.

It is an air bag off and steering wheel off to change it, about £87 from mercedes.

The base of the stalk cuts the thin wires where it pivits, no repair can be made due to the short wires........................

Have had a search and can't find anything online! Will I really get one from Mercedes for about £87?

Would like to have a go at fixing the switch... do you know how to get inside to the internals? No obvious way of removing the shroud/plastic head!

Yes that is the price from Mercedes, warning, once you have taken off the air bag, do not turn the ignition on or the car will have to go on STAR to remove the SRS warning.

Take it off by all means and see what you can do with it.

So I took my car to my local garage for mot and service and to have the new indicator stalk fitted, after three hours trying to get the old one off they called me to say that half the dash would need to come out!! Is this right? They reckon it will be half a day!!!

That is not right at all, If they do not know what they are doing they will mess up the clock spring. Take it to an indie, it does not take long

What is the clock spring? The clock on the dash is now wrong so need to work out how to reset it!

I have the same problem on mine. All works fine except for windscreen wash and single button press wipe. That only works on main beam. So I'm looking at fitting a new stalk.

Based on searching, this is what I think i have to do..

Disconnect battery for 30 mins.
Remove 2 bolts to release airbag and unplug the 3 connectors.
Remove 3 bolts for clock spring assembly and carefully pull out.
NB marking alignment points on both steering wheel and clock spring.

Does that all sound right?

Now i'm in the dark though, but hope its obvious how the stalk assembly comes out once your this far in. But if anyone has any pointers i'd be grateful to hear them.

TIA.

The steering wheel must be removed too.
