Just fitted new set of wheels to my CLK 230k [w208] 225/40/18 all round.

After fitting on and taking car for a quick spin round the block noticed a clicking noise coming from both rear wheels.

Pulled in and checked the clearance on the wheels but couldnt find any problems there

Checked the heat shield and brake discs as well but also no problem there.

Took the car to a the nearest yocal garage and and managed to drag the mechanic away from his lunch.

Took him for a drive in the car so he could try and diagnose the problem. He explained the only time he had heard a noise like that before was with brake problems.

He had a fiddle around but couldnt find any problem on the brakes. He admitted he had no idea what the problem was and offered the advice ' maybe whatever is making the noise will just wear away?' :)

However sure enough, i drove the car back into the city (30 mile drive) and within about 5 minutes the clicking/rubbing noise had completly dissapeared.

However on waking up this morning to drive to work i find i have a clicking noise from both rear wheels again. Though about a minute down the road this noise has completly gone again.

Any suggestions? (this problem is only from the rear wheels and absolutly no problem with the front two)

Also, the car has always veered to the left slightly but since fitting new wheels it has got a lot worse and steering feels too light. Is a wheel alignment likely to improve the situation?

it sounds like

the bolts have gone through to the parking brake mechanism. I had the same problem when I fitted non MB locking nuts.
Are the wheels MB originals, if not, this will be the cause of your problem. You might have to grind a bit off your wheel bolts to get rid of the noise.
Personally, I'd be hauling the back wheels off right now to check I hadn't completely goosed the parking brake mechanism.
As you say it goes away after a warm up,it sounds like it's minimal interference. Check anyway.

If you have wheel balance weights on the inside of the alloy wheel, the check to see whether they are catching on brake shrouding.

As Myros says it will just be the wheel bolts a touch too long, I had to grind 3mm off mine when using the winter wheels.

forgot to report back on this.

took the car out to a friends house who had a grinder. Got the car raised and back wheel off.

On taking the bolts up to the grinder i noticed that the two bolts in hand had different necks.

on further investigation the two bolts were actually a different size

much to my embarrasement it was revealed that the new wheels had actually been provied with two different bolts !!! (front bolts and rear bolts)

All have been swopped around now and the knocking noise from back wheels is gone.

We have all done silly things or not looked well enough with something new, it takes a man to admit it.
