CLK230 engine noise ?

Appears an odd noise is coming from under the bonnet of my CLK.

A friend described it as the fan belt slipping. I have no idea what that means and you'll think I'm stupid for saying so but my car mechanic skills are very very limited ! Sorry !

The noise is intermittent and not apparent at any one consistent given time but seems to be heard when the car is crawling and then disappears if the brake pedal is pressed and also when you turn the ignition off you hear it for a second as the engine dies, if that makes sense.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be and if its going to cost a furtune to repair ?

you'll get a technical response I'm sure. My initial thought is the v-belt that drive your aircon, power steering n stuff.

If it's original it will be old, cracked and hard and may be the cause.

Quite possibly an idler pulley for the belt, they have the tendency to male a belt noise as you described.

have a listen with the bonnet open.

Most likely, anyway the best way to sort a squeaky belt isnt wd40 anyway, that only quitens it down for a short time, the best and most effective way is to clean with small wire brush on the grooved side, by very very carefully rubbing the belt whilst engine running on the grooved side. hold the brush firmly and lightly clean belt.
