Hi there,

I am new to this forum so first and foremost a big hello to all. I am currently a Skyline GTR owner and am looking to make the swap over to MB land.

I am struggling to find any buyers guides, but am interested in an early 2000s CLK500 or CLK55 AMG, possibly an E55.

Can anyone give me any tips on what to look for? Known recalls etc?

Engine (55) is a peach, rust is an issue with MB's from around 2000. If the car is post mid 99 and has a full MB service history then there is a 30 yr corrosion warranty.

So, in terms of engine... no recalls, no suspension recalls.... the gearbox is good, the diff is good.... etc...

I am assuming that running costs are going to be on a par with my GTR... as in 300miles to a 70litre full tank.....

Is this a car that requires MB servicing? typically I shy away from it as I think it is a big con (Kwik Fit with MB Workshop Manuals), but I have been wrong before.

Malcolm (Television) should be able to give you all the recall (if any) info. Gearbox is good and officially was sealed for life, however 60K ATF changes are now recommended. From start of yr2000 the Torque converter drain plug was ommited so only 4 out of the 7 Ltrs can now be easiliy changed.
I would try and find one with full MB service history and from a MB outlet if possible as they will warrant it for 12 months (or up to 120,000 miles). The MB warranty is IMHO well worth having as they do cover just about everything.
As MB's are particularly complex normal garages can have problems and cause more issues than they solve. The general consensus (if there ever was one on the forum) is to find a decent MB trained independant garage. If you add your general location to your profile members will be able to give you advice on recommended garages.
Fuel economy will depend upon your right foot.
