Has anyone got experience of whether there is a trick to draining these AMG V8's completely?

I recently had my neighbouring garage change the oil on our CLK55AMG. They are a non-specialised garage, but they work on all sorts of cars including the owner's family's AMG's etc.

They thought they had completely drained the oil, going to some lengths to ensure it was all out - making sure the filter housing was open before they drained etc. They then refilled with less than the amount that should fill the sump. Checked the electronic dipstick - said ok.

But then, shortly after, the display flashed red to say the engine oil was over filled. After some scratching of heads, it went to the MB dealer to check - they found nearly 2 litres too much oil inside!

Now, I still have the remnant of the Mobil 1 can here, with about 2 litres left in it - so they only used 8 litres. The engine takes 8.5, yet we still had 2 litres too much??

Or has someone started filling with ordinary oil - realised their mistake after 1 jug full and then switched to the Mobil 1 that we obtained specially?

Many garages suck the oil out with a pump, rather than take out the drain plug and this must have been the case here.
With the drain plug out and a refill you should have just a bit left after putting in 8 liters. I have never had a problem diong by draining

R230...about to purchase will update shortly
Colchelle, is this the same on an E430? I thought the 430 engine was (very basically) a 55 with piston liners, Must admit my local grease monkey who drains it from the bottom - with me watching has never mentioned anything about 2nd sump plugs.. Its being done this friday, so best to be sure :)

Cheers

No yours will have the single drain plug. It is only some of the AMG built engines which have 2. The 55 kompressor and the 63 lump etc.

Its there for the higher oil demand of the amg engines and the room to have the steering and subframe running through the middle, giving two lower sump areas.

It was drained from below - I can see them working on the car from my office window, which is one reason why I use them. Being neighbours for 18 years helps too...

Our 55 is not a Kompressor obviously - but would it still have the two plugs? It is AMG built after all, with the makers name plaque on top!

I had a look around last night and not all of them have 2 plugs, and thet can be seen on the Russian site, it still does not add up some how unless they did put too much oil in, in the first place

As colechelle and I said, 2 plugs on most amg built engines.

Not always obvious but remove all under trays and you will see.
