Hi all

My old car has come up for sale with my private number plate still attached.

It was sold to the "dealer" with its original plates.

These plates are currently on my car. He has done this to hide the fact that the car is a cat c.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201411048741983

I'm pretty angry bit need to go about this the right way to avoid getting parking fines and letters from dvla when the new owners tries to register etc.

What's the best way?

The dealers local Trading standards may be worth a call as well.
If it was me, and the dealer nearby, I'd go there and give him 10 mins to remove the plate, or every authority poss. will be all over his premises like a rash. Oh and inform autotrader.

Have informed Autotrader, Have called police who are going to be coming round later on to take some details. Have also informed DVLA, need to write a letter to them (of course.)

They arent that close or I would be outside his house.

I wonder that if the car has just been sold then the DVLA records will not be up to date as the car is in a state of flux and maybe it would be illegal to advertise the car with plates that were not registered??
Just a thought.

Thats very illegal. Well done for getting something done asap.
I once got done for an old car still being in my name somehow. I'd done my bit, so I dont understand how it happened. The car got used in a ram raid! They believed that wasn't me, but I had to pay some parking tickets.

Oh wow, that is actually criminal.

I can't believe he would have actually had them made up to sell the car!

I would phone the DVLA, send them an accompanying letter and advise the police, all of which it seems like you have done.

Good luck in getting it sorted.

How did you change registration back to old one. Reg plates are not your private plates they are assigned to a car. Unless you transferred them to your new car via DVLA and DVLA then confirmed the reg for the old car he is doing nothing wrong.
What Reg No did the Reg Doc show when you sold it

The OP already stated its his private plate that has been re-printed by the dealer. He sold the car bearing it's original registration number, the 51 plate.
Given that his private plate is now on his current car, both physically and via the DVLA the dealer is either misguided or wilfully criminal.

Interested to hear what the dealer has to say on this, there is no 'oh I thought blah blah blah', this seems blatent to hide the Cat C, also reflected in the price.

Anyone doing a HPI on the reg will show clear but as Alex's current vehicle, the dealer will blame DVLA and hide the fact it is Cat C

Given his name and the plate, it's either serendipity on a monumental scale or the situation is exactly as the OP lays out.

I'm interested in the motivation of the dealer, I'm trying to see how he thinks he can achieve a sale given the V5 must have the 51 plate on it

Either that or the car is a true ringer and someone had managed to find Alex's number plate from somewhere?
