Clonking noise from front

When I turn right into (or out of) a parking space (forward or reverse), there is a clonking sound which appears to come from the front left wheel. The streering does not have to be full lock for it to happen. It does not happen when turning left. Does anybody know what this might be about?

I also get a lot of wear on the inner front tyres. The local Indy garage told me this is normal for Mercs. Is this true?

The clonk is normally wear in the rollbar drop link, £6 and easy to change.

I have a clonk or knock from the front left too, but when going over bumps, i ahve a 2002 c180 coupe, and on mine i could replicate the noise by turning the steering from left to right by 1/2 a turn, turns out to be the nearside track-rod end. Mercedes quoted £220, but the garage that i bought the car from quoted £80. £25 part, £22.50 labour, £20 Tracking +VAT.

So im going for the £80 option, is there any real reason mercedes are so much more?

MB labour rates are high, I know its arguable, but you do not have to do the tracking if it is an original part, and it is fitted with care.
