Hi guys is there a way of checking the timing belt for stretch without a strip down? Also is fitting the timing belt tensioner a DIY job? I think I may have heard a weird noise for a couple of seconds during a cold start up but can't be sure. Thanks

as far as i know, no belt here. its chain and my research indicates that i can change chain and tensioner but its not for the inexperienced or faint hearted . if mine started clanking i would change tensioner 1st in case thats the culprit i certainly would NOT be driving it about until i knew wot was going on.

Also if the noise is not present at every start up then is it ok?

The wear can be chain guide, chain or sprocket, my guess is that if the sprocket wears there is more of a tendency to hear intermittent noise on start-up, suggest you replace all three if the job needs doing

Thanks for the comments but how do I know the job needs doing?

I’d start by replacing the chain tensioner which is a relatively inexpensive job and if that doesn’t fix the problem a new chain and sprockets will be required

This is a 212 strip down to show how the chain and tensioner job is done

Talking with my local indie, and it's booked in for next week to have timing chain kit replaced he says he does them regularly, I forgot ask him what a timing chain kit entails anyone know? Is it timing chain, tensioner and pulleys?

I've seen kits with and without sprockets. If it's an MB Indy I would expect he will change the lot but there's no harm in asking him? Just google OM651 timing chain kit and checkout the pics..

Many believe that the start/stop function may cause wear on the chain so turn it off everytime you start off..

Not good so not surprised , yes London is a place one would save fuel with stop start , except you don't in the end .

A blessing , no eml , just a stored fault code.

Months later the battery had good voltage as I connected the charger and took no time at all .
