CO2 emissions too high on 300TE

help .... I had my trusty old W124 300TE 4Matic petrol 3litre 6 serviced & pre MOT checked by a French dealership last month & it has just failed the French MOT on CO2 Emissions with a reading of 5.4% CO2 the pass mark is 4.5% CO2, is it a simple job to reduce this if so how do I do it?

There is also mention by the dealership of the auto box seal being corroded and the transmission fluid getting lightly contaminated with hydro fluid, should I be worried about it?

It depends on the age of the car for the above adjustment, if you have it no more the 1/8th of a turn at a time.

These car often need an Italian tune up to get them through,,thats a high speed run locked in 1st or 2nd

Thats right,,I had to in Sweden, and even the testers do that for you over there,,and we have told folk to do it here and it works

It passed the re-test today on the first go, your suggestion about the Italian tune up worked a treat, I put a bottle of injector cleaner through it and just before the test I drove about in 2nd & 3rd for half an hour sitting at 5K revs for 5 minutes or more at a time, turned up for the test 5 minutes before time and it sailed through with an emissions reading of 3.9%, another two years of happy motoring ahead so thanks again

So you only have to hit 4.5% every 2 years??!!??

In France, like most of Europe, the MOT equivalent is every two years.

spot on Simon, every two years or after any accident for the control technique (MOT),
I will probably get the seal sorted on the next long trip back to the U.K. as the garage prices over here are well expensive for "big jobs" and the old bus only does about 6000 miles per year plus its hard to justify the cost of repairs when I could probably buy another old Merc' for the same amount ...
