Was driving my car (CLK 230K) the other day....parked up, and when I came back and restarted the idle was very lumpy. Car was running fine before. The car drives but when I drove home it was severely lacking in power....tried the kickdown and it was really flat. I've recently fitted a new Siemens MAF sensor so I assume it's not the fault.

I've noticed since then that when it idles there is also a smell of petrol (I'm assuming unburnt fuel).
Does this sound like one of the coil packs has gone and it's running on 3 cylinders? This car has four coil packs....anyone know an easy way to check which one (if any) is at fault? If not the coil packs, any other suggestions what it could be?

Thanks, Darren

Take the plugs out and loom for the one thats black, that will be the one with the failed coil pack.

MAF and coil packs tend to go hand in hand when the fail, best get some diags run on the car to be sure though.

Get it plugged into a diagnostic machine and get the codes read it will tell you which one it is.

Mine cost me about £150. Ordered it from http://www.maf-shop.com/
Really good service...they courier it via DHL from Germany in about 2-3 days. Geniune Bosch/Siemens parts at about half the price of the Merc stealers! :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I've got my own code reader so I'll give it a try.
