my cl500 failed the MOT today due to a broken coil spring on the front, can anyone recommend where to buy these, eurocarparts dont have them and said they are main dealer only, any suggestions anyone please.

Buy from main dealer. The spring rates are calibrated via you cars data card (ie, what extras, spec etc) so there is no set poundage rate. This makes it difficult to but aftermarket ones which would probably give it a harsh ride anyway.

Don't even consider going anywhere else than the dealer for the springs (best fitted in pairs). If Europarts did stock them it would just be a geneal spring but MB have several different ones. They will get the correct one for your car.

As type 49 and turnipsock says.
It is said that they should be fitted in pairs, does this make a difference if the car is not that old, like this one. MB do not keep them in matched pairs.

Can type49 throw any light on this practice.

Buy from dealer but get an indie to fit them (providing they have the tools). Not a nice job even if you do have all the tools. Recommend to change in pairs. If ones broken, whats the other one like? Should have annodes fitted to the bottom of the spring to stop corrosion build-up.

We are so lucky on this forum to be able to get answers like this. :D

Hi, I recently had to get 2 new rear springs on my C320, cost at an Indie was £210 for dealer supplied springs, they said they would never use aftermarket ones.
Not a bad price I thought.

There seems to be a weakness with 203 springs, easy to do though & you can get away without having a merc spring compressor.

Many thanks to you all for your help, Ive just spoken to MB in Cambridge and the chap in the parts dept took my chassis number from me and said he will call back with a price, he mentioned that the springs work on a points system, know idea what this means.
I decided to replace both on the front, I dont like the idea of replacing just one spring or one shock etc.
Will give an update on price and what to do next as I need to find someone to fit them, there are two indie's near by so I could book it in with them.

The points system is based on the car and what options are fitted as these make a difference to the car's weight. For most MB's if you look on the Russian site you can see 8 of 9 different springs for what appears to be the same model. This is one reason why only MB springs should be fitted.
If you find your car on here and go to suspension you should be able to see the points system at the bottom of the relevant page http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1

If someone rounded up all of the broken springs, they could put them on Ebay as lowering kits.

Well this was a suprise, I called MB in Cambridges yesterday (wed) to order the 2 front coild springs for my CL. Half expecting to be told there would be a delay for at least 16 years while MB make them for me only to be told "we have them in stock". In stock where?, I asked, "here at the dealership in Cambridge" was the reply.
So I paid for them and told the chap I would pick them up on saturday morning. Anyway last night at about 7.30 theres a knock on the door, outside was a chap and a new MB and two coil springs, chap said he lived in the village and thought he would pop them over on the way home.
what a result, 10/10 for service, will buy all my spares from MB in Cambridge from now on.

I think MB are beginning to realise that many owners dont get the customer service they expect.
My father has been a loyal customers to MB in Leicester for the last 18 years, he always gave the car to them for the simplest of jobs and has paid serious money in that 18 years. It was the last straw when they charged a small fortune to fix the AC that waste cold enough and left it blowing warm air. Dad now drives for 2 hours to a specialist for his car to be looked after.

Porsche dealers introduced a 5 year club, if your porsche was over 5 years old it entitled you to cheaper labour and parts costs, this brought customers back to Porsche, MB show consider doing the same thing.

Some Merc dealers already do it - ie Tony Purslow (Hants & Surrey) do 40% on labour for older cars (over 6 years old I think).

its taken two days for me to change the front coil spring on my CL, I have road tested the car today and it drives better for the new springs the question I have is now the springs have been replaced the car seems to be 2 inches higher on the front to what it used to be, will this settle because the springs are new or is it possible MB sold me the wrong springs.

What a nightmare!! You will have to double check with the dealer. I know this is a different situation but....... did you know that if you bought a part from MB & fitted it youself, only to find that part was faulty, MB are obliged to renew & fit the part through warranty, even though you fitted it originally. Might be worth finding out how you stand if the parts are wrong.
