Hello. I have a 1991, 190E 1.8 which has an idle problem. It idles to low when cold then idles too fast when hot. It has been suggested that the problem may be the cold start valve which I understand can be a common fault.

I have priced up the valve and have been quoted about £60.00. Is there any way of testing to see if this is the problem before I go ahead and order one or do I have to just bite the bullet and hope that my £60.00 is well spent?

Thanks in advance of any replies.

Cheers.

My understanding of the cold start valve is that it is only in operation when the starter motor is turning. Have you checked the OVP relay.

Hi Malcolm - thanks for having me!

This may seem a bit odd but yes, I have checked for the OVP relay but it doesn't appear to be there. I'm assuming I'm not checking in the right place because presumably the car wouldn't run without it?

My understanding was that it was located in the fuse box and was located '2nd from the back' and had a fuse on top? I have the holes in the fuse box for something to plug into but there is nothing there.

Thanks Malcolm - will start hunting tomorrow for the damn thing - I guess it could be somewhere other than inside the fuse box.

Cheers.

The ISC Valve (idle speed control valve) does have known issues, however from what you have said I would check then temperature sensor first and this little item cost a lot less money.

You remove it and hold it over a bowl, turn on the ignition and check that the spray angle is at 45º once started and warm nothing should come out of it

Its behind the battery behind the plastic cover, and it itself is usually covered with a black cover, its right at the back on the left of the bigger ABS and KE ECU's.
