My screen rattles and has two paper wedges to stop it driving me mad. I can slide out the comand unit but can not see how to remove the front panel to check how the screen is secured. Any help to fix this annoyance would be appreciated.

The whole front of the comand is secured by four screws. Two on either side of the comand.

You will need a torx10 screwdriver to remove them. Once removed, the front simply pulls off. To then dismantle the front you need to be very careful and remove the PCb from the back plus all the screws. there are about 25 of them in total. Be careful otherwise the keys will all drop out of place and you'll have a lot of fun getting them all back in again!

If you want to come up to Surrey one lunchtime, i'll do it for you.

Good luck!

Thanks

I will give the first part a go. If fear strikes at the second stage I may take you up on your offer.

Which model of comand is this? what car/model year is it in?

I may have a spare front panel floating around.

Front Panel

Hi, Its on a CLK 55 AMG (208 ). I have only had it a few weeks and the PO was a smoker and the Comand unit seemed to have sucked smoke from the ashtray and the inside was brown. The dealer (not MB) had the unit removed and cleaned and it now works fine but with the rattle. I downloaded and installed MY01 and the NAV and orignal phone work well. The radio reception is not as good as my previous Sony but I suspect the rear window lower amp is not as good as it should be. Mercedes want £95 plus VAT for a replacement but it will do for now. This weekend I will take the two screws each side out and see what it looks like. Thanks for the support.

Front Panel - outcome

Following the advice from Alfie (thanks) I slid the comand forward a few inches to reveal the TX screws each side. Once the screws were removed the front panel came off in one lump. Retired to the dining table and removed the four tiny TX screws in each corner which allowed the plastic front to be unpluged and set aside. The display was loose as two of the screws (crosshead) that hold the display to the PCB were undone (thread US). Drop of superglue and a nip fixed the display. Reassembled all but the buttons no longer worked. TIP - the connector between the plastic panel PCB and the display PCB can slide through the PCB without connecting to the button PCB - if that makes sense. Need to make sure the connector is fully pushed into the front PCB. All back together and it works! No more rattle. Just need to hide the superglue stain on the tablecloth! Great Forum.
